Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a dynamic team to help conserve and restore Southeast Alaska’s salmon and steelhead rivers. The Southeast Alaska Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for engaging the public in conservation and restoration opportunities.
This person will represent TU throughout the region, plan, attend and host events and activities that build community connections, share information and stories supporting habitat conservation and restoration, and develop sustaining community partnerships.
They will connect with Southeast Alaska community leaders, business owners, anglers and hunters, partners, and visitors to convey the importance of restoring and conserving fish habitat to southeast Alaska’s economy, communities, and fishing opportunities.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, collaborative, and a reliable self-starter who enjoys interacting with a wide variety of people. They have experience and skills in a range of public outreach tactics, exceptional communication and “people” skills, strong writing skills and have a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. They have a good sense of humor, knowledge of and passion for salmon and trout in Southeast Alaska and are excited to contribute to a fish-filled future for Alaska.
This is a part-time (less than 30 hrs/week), remote position, and candidates must be based in Southeast Alaska. Seasonal flexibility considered for the right candidate.
Duties and responsibilities
- Plan and implement Trout Unlimited’s community engagement activities in Southeast Alaska.
- Educate and engage anglers and community members in fish habitat conservation and restoration.
- Host events and regularly attend relevant community events that build support for fish habitat conservation and restoration.
- Grow a volunteer network of people who will help advance conservation and restoration objectives in Southeast Alaska.
- Develop new and help maintain existing partnerships.
- Support America’s Salmon Forest social media presence through robust digital content creation and storytelling.
- Work on collaborative communications projects with the Alaska communications director to tell the story of America’s Salmon Forest.
- Represent TU in an inclusive and conscientious manner that is consistent with the organization’s brand, approach, mission, and goals.

Requirements:- Creative vision and enthusiasm for growing a community engagement program in Southeast Alaska.
- Experience planning and implementing events, coordinating meetings and conducting public outreach activities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity and experience using public communications platforms to engage people (ex: social media and email platforms; podcasts; video).
- Highly motivated and self-directed, with strong time-management skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience working with diverse communities in a collaborative and inclusive manner.
- Passion for southeast Alaska’s lands, waters and salmon.
- Knowledge of salmon and trout habitat needs and how to engage people in natural resource issues.
- Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Must be based in southeast Alaska. Ability and willingness to travel throughout Southeast Alaska and to work weekend and evening hours when necessary. Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required.
- Physical ability to stand for several hours at a time and carry and set up equipment for community events.
