TITLE: Assistant Grounds Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Facilities
REPORTS TO: Associate VP Capital Planning and Facility Mgmt.
CLASSIFICATION: Staff
EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD
LOCATION: On-Site Main Campus
STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, assists the Grounds Supervisor in maintaining campus grounds and provides leadership in the coordination, setup, and breakdown of campus events. Oversees and participates in event support operations, ensuring timely, safe, and high-quality execution in collaboration with campus departments and event planners.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists in coordinating and assigning work to grounds and event setup staff for campus grounds maintenance and event operations.
- Supervises and participates in the setup and breakdown of campus events, including tables, chairs, staging, risers, podiums, pipe and drape, and related equipment.
- Reads and interprets event layouts, diagrams, and work orders to ensure accurate setup according to specifications.
- Ensures proper placement and arrangement of furniture and equipment for events.
- Trains, schedules, and provides guidance to grounds staff, setup staff, and student workers.
- Assists in inspecting work and ensuring compliance with established standards and event requirements.
- Ensures adherence to safety standards, including proper lifting and handling procedures.
- Inspects event spaces before and after events to ensure cleanliness, safety, and proper arrangement.
- Coordinates with campus departments, Facilities staff, and event planners to accommodate event needs, including last-minute changes.
- Maintains inventory of tables, chairs, staging, and related event equipment.
- Reports maintenance needs and damaged equipment.
- Operates grounds maintenance equipment and tools as needed and assists with general grounds upkeep.
- Participates in snow removal and inclement weather response activities as required.
- Serves as lead in the absence of the Grounds Supervisor, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of event setup procedures, equipment, and safety practices.
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment, tools, and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret floor plans, diagrams, and work orders.
- Skill in operating grounds and event-related equipment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to lead, direct, and work collaboratively with staff and student workers.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- Provides work direction and oversight to grounds staff, setup staff, and student workers; limited supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Grounds Supervisor.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
- Two (2) to three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance, event setup, facilities operations, or related field.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
Licensing and Certifications: NA
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and outdoor conditions.
- Frequent lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling; requires the ability to lift and move objects over 50 pounds.
- Combination of indoor and outdoor work environments supporting campus events.
- Fast-paced environment with multiple priorities, tight deadlines, and occasional evening and weekend work based on event schedules.
Facilities Department employees are considered “essential employees”. As such, all Facilities Department employees are required to report for work during emergencies as well as University closings.
