Job Description:
Chesapeake Public Library is seeking an outgoing and enthusiastic part-time Driver I with a passion for delivery services, new technology, and public service. The Library Courier plays a vital role in keeping our library system connected and running smoothly. More than deliveries, this position allows you to help refine routes and procedures while using and learning modern library technology. With every route and interaction, the Library Courier supports excellent customer service and helps to uphold City of Chesapeake CARES Standards and the Library’s Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities include:
  • Working with a team member or independently to safely collect, transport, and deliver library materials, documents, and related items between library locations.
  • Completing special delivery runs for furniture, fixtures, equipment, supplies, gift books, and other items as needed.
  • Following all safety rules, traffic laws, and safe working practices; using required safety equipment.
  • Loading and unloading the vehicle efficiently and with care.
  • Monitoring vehicle operation, reporting issues, and scheduling routine maintenance; fueling the vehicle as needed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the vehicle, including routine washing and interior cleaning.
  • Providing friendly, helpful customer service and communicating professionally in-person, phone, email, and/or text with library staff and other City departments.
  • Completing and submitting passenger or vehicle incident/accident reports when necessary.
  • Maintaining logs, delivery records, and related documentation in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Assisting with departmental supply inventory and submitting purchase requisitions to replenish stock.
  • Using a computer to check daily delivery needs and supply requests.
  • Sorting and processing library materials, including shelving returned or pulling library materials.
  • Performing seasonal tasks such as shoveling snow and spreading ice melt.
  • Carrying out other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with a box truck, cargo van, and/or operating a vehicle with a lift; use of equipment such as Amazon Hub Lockers, self-checkouts, Red Box, printers, or assembly line machinery; and use of applications like Microsoft, Internet, and email is highly desired.

A CDL license is not required for the Library Department position.

Must be able to maneuver a hand truck, lift, bend, step, reach, and stoop
