What You Will Do
- The Assistant Dean of Students serves as a central support and coordination hub for student well-being, accountability, and success. The role exists to ensure that students have access to the guidance, resources, and advocacy they need to navigate challenges that may impact their academic progress or personal stability. This includes overseeing systems that respond to student concerns, connecting individuals to appropriate campus or community resources, and helping maintain a campus environment that is safe, equitable, and responsive.
- Core duties typically include managing student care and advocacy processes, overseeing conduct and accountability systems, and coordinating interventions for students in distress or crisis. The position often supervises case management workflows such as CARE reports, medical leaves of absence, and basic needs support services. In addition, the role collaborates closely with campus partners (faculty, staff, and external agencies) to ensure a coordinated response to student needs. The products of this work include structured support plans, educational interventions, policy implementation, and programs that promote awareness, reporting, and student engagement.
- The primary beneficiaries are students, particularly those experiencing barriers to success, who gain access to timely support, advocacy, and clear pathways forward. Faculty and staff also benefit through consultation and shared responsibility in addressing student concerns, while the institution as a whole benefits from improved student retention, well-being, and a stronger culture of care and accountability. Ultimately, the role helps create an environment where students are supported holistically and empowered to persist and succeed
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
-Masters degree in Higher Education, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field
-A minimum of 3 years of experience in higher education in areas such as student conduct administration, student engagement, crisis response, student wellbeing, student success, behavioral intervention, or duties related to the position
-Two years of related experience in crisis management and response (can be concurrent with above).
-Knowledge of theory, national research, current issues, and recent events regarding college student support and resources
-Knowledge and understanding of federal and state laws that guide student conduct and case management, such as FERPA, Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act, and ADA.
Preferred Qualifications
Five ore more years post master's experience
Experience supervising full-time staff
Experience with Maxient system
Demonstrated knowledge of the legal and cultural factors that impact the retention and graduation of students experiencing mental distress, poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity.
Demonstrated ability to manage difficult and complex situations in a compassionate and empathetic manner
Experience administering programming within a community or higher education setting.
