Job Description

Tax Manager

Schlaupitz Madhavan, P.C. (SMCPA) is a growing CPA and advisory firm recognized for its collaborative culture, high standards, and commitment to excellence. We’re seeking an experienced Tax Manager to advise clients, manage complex tax engagements, and support the continued growth of our tax practice.

The Tax Manager will serve individual clients, trusts, estates, and related business interests while leading a small professional staff. This role is ideal for a technically strong tax professional who enjoys advising clients, managing complex engagements, mentoring team members, and working closely with firm Managers and Partners to deliver exceptional service.

What You’ll Do
  • Advise clients on tax matters and planning opportunities relevant to their personal, trust, estate, and business tax situations.
  • Manage and review federal and state tax returns for individuals, businesses, trusts, estates, and other entities, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable tax laws.
  • Oversee assigned client engagements, including workload, workflow, deadlines, deliverables, and engagement documentation.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients by responding to questions, providing proactive updates, gathering information, and delivering high-quality service.
  • Conduct tax research, stay current on federal and state tax developments, and communicate relevant findings to clients and engagement teams.
  • Review and respond to IRS and state tax notices, audits, examinations, and other tax matters, escalating complex issues as appropriate.
  • Review workpapers, financial statements, projections, estimates, and other client deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
  • Supervise, train, mentor, and provide technical guidance and feedback to tax staff and senior associates.
  • Participate in client meetings, business development activities, firm initiatives, and special projects that support long-term client relationships.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, confidentiality, technical excellence, and compliance with professional and regulatory standards.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with an emphasis in Taxation; Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
  • Active CPA or Enrolled Agent license.
  • Minimum six years of broad tax experience, including individual and trust taxation.
  • Experience with a variety of entity types and complex individual tax matters.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a public accounting environment.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state income tax laws applicable to individuals, corporations, and pass-through entities.
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software (e.g., CCH Axcess, GoSystem) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements

This position primarily involves sedentary office work. Occasional travel to client sites may be required. Ability to operate standard office equipment and work extended hours during peak tax periods.

Ann Arbor, Bingham Farms, and Troy, Michigan
