Position Summary

The Shop Foreman is a hands on leadership position responsible for helping guide the daily activities of employees within the Adel manufacturing shop.

This position works closely with shop employees throughout the day to ensure assigned work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and according to production priorities.

The Shop Foreman provides daily direction, assigns and helps coordinate work, monitors job progress, answers employee questions, identifies production concerns, and helps keep employees focused on completing their assigned tasks.

This role is expected to be present and engaged on the shop floor. The Shop Foreman should understand the work being performed and be willing to step in, provide guidance, demonstrate proper processes, and help employees resolve issues when needed.

The successful candidate will be a strong leader who communicates clearly, holds employees accountable, supports teamwork, and helps create an organized and productive shop environment.

Essential ResponsibilitiesDaily Shop Leadership

• Provide daily direction and guidance to shop employees regarding work assignments, production priorities, and expected completion times.

• Review daily production needs with management and help organize employees and resources based on workload and priorities.

• Assign and coordinate daily tasks based on employee skills, production requirements, and department needs.

• Clearly communicate expectations for each job, including quality, accuracy, timing, and completion requirements.

• Remain visible and accessible on the shop floor to answer questions and provide direction throughout the workday.

• Help employees understand what needs to be completed and the proper process for completing the work.

• Monitor employee progress throughout the day and redirect work when production priorities change.

• Follow up on assigned tasks to ensure work is completed as expected.

Production Efficiency

• Help keep production moving by identifying delays, bottlenecks, material issues, equipment concerns, or other barriers to job completion.

• Monitor daily workflow and help employees work efficiently without sacrificing quality or safety.

• Help ensure employees have the tools, materials, equipment, drawings, and information needed to complete their assignments.

• Work with employees to improve work methods, organization, productivity, and use of shop resources.

• Help reduce unnecessary downtime, rework, waste, and production delays.

• Communicate production concerns to management before they create significant delays.

• Support production schedules and help the team meet daily and weekly completion goals.

Quality and Accuracy

• Reinforce the expectation that work must be completed correctly the first time.

• Review work throughout the production process to identify quality or accuracy concerns before jobs move to the next stage.

• Ensure employees follow drawings, measurements, specifications, work instructions, and established production procedures.

• Address errors or inconsistencies with employees and provide coaching on the correct process.

• Help reduce rework, material waste, missed steps, and preventable production errors.

• Escalate significant quality concerns to management when appropriate.

Employee Guidance and Accountability

• Set clear expectations for attendance, productivity, teamwork, communication, safety, and work quality.

• Provide employees with regular coaching and feedback regarding their performance.

• Help train new employees on shop procedures, job expectations, equipment use, and production standards.

• Support employees who need additional instruction or clarification regarding their assigned duties.

• Address performance or conduct concerns in a timely and professional manner and communicate significant concerns to management.

• Encourage employees to take ownership of their work, workspace, tools, and responsibilities.

• Help maintain a respectful and professional work environment.

• Lead by example through attendance, work ethic, communication, attitude, safety, and accountability.

Safety and Shop Organization

• Promote and reinforce safe work practices throughout the shop.

• Ensure employees follow company safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment.

• Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, equipment, or work practices and address them promptly.

• Immediately report accidents, injuries, near misses, or serious safety concerns according to company procedures.

• Help maintain clean, organized, and safe production areas.

• Ensure tools and equipment are properly used, stored, and cared for.

• Communicate equipment repair or maintenance needs to the appropriate manager or department.

Communication and Coordination

• Communicate daily production status, completed work, delays, staffing concerns, quality issues, and other shop matters to management.

• Coordinate with other departments when necessary to keep production moving.

• Participate in production meetings and communicate relevant information back to shop employees.

• Help ensure shift priorities and management expectations are clearly communicated to employees.

• Provide accurate information regarding job status and anticipated completion.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.

• At least three years of experience in manufacturing, steel fabrication, metal manufacturing, construction manufacturing, or a similar industrial environment preferred.

• Previous experience as a Foreman, Lead, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other shop leadership position strongly preferred.

• Experience directing employees and coordinating daily production work.

• Ability to understand production schedules, work orders, drawings, measurements, and job specifications.

• Basic understanding of manufacturing quality standards and production processes.

• Working knowledge of shop safety practices.

• Ability to communicate clearly with employees, supervisors, and management.

• Ability to identify problems and help develop practical solutions.

Leadership Expectations

The Shop Foreman is expected to lead from the shop floor.

This position is not limited to assigning work. The Foreman should understand what employees are working on, monitor progress, provide guidance when employees need assistance, and help ensure jobs are moving toward completion.

The Foreman should create clarity for the team by answering three basic questions each day:

  1. What needs to be completed today?
  2. Who is responsible for completing it?
  3. Is the work being completed safely, accurately, and on time?

The Shop Foreman should address concerns early, communicate clearly, and help employees understand both what is expected and why it matters.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

This position works primarily within a manufacturing and steel production environment.

The employee may be required to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods.

• Bend, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, or move throughout production areas.

• Lift, carry, push, or pull 50 pounds or more, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Work around manufacturing equipment, machinery, steel materials, and active production operations.

• Work in a non-climate-controlled facility and be exposed to heat, cold, humidity, dust, noise, and other conditions common to a manufacturing environment.

• Wear required personal protective equipment at all times while in designated production areas.

• Safely move throughout the shop floor and work near active machinery and material handling equipment.

• Perform the essential physical duties of the position for extended periods during the workday.
