The USS Midway School Field Trip program has a great opportunity for experienced teachers looking to use their skills in an informal, fun, teaching environment. USS Midway Museum Educators support our popular onboard program for grades 2 – 8 by delivering engaging, standards-aligned learning experiences for school-aged audiences. This position is ideal for educators who enjoy working with elementary and middle school students, have a passion for informal education, and who thrive in a dynamic, hands-on museum setting. Position Details:
- Hourly Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour
- Traditional school schedule: weekdays Monday – Friday, through the months AUGUST – JUNE
- Work shift hours are 8:30am – 1:30pm
- 15-20 – hours per week
- Three (3) days per week required availability. Days vary based on department need.
- Additional hours may be available through cross-training with our other Youth Leadership Programs
Position Summary:
This role facilitates interactive STEM-based field trip programs for students in grades 2–8, integrating science, math, and social studies through the history, physical space, and stories of the historic aircraft carrier. Educators work directly with students and classroom teachers in an informal learning environment aboard the USS Midway Museum, leading inquiry-based lessons that emphasize active participation, strong classroom management, and appropriate grade instruction.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Facilitate engaging, inquiry-based educational programs for school groups participating in daytime onboard programs.
- Deliver interactive lessons that integrate science, math, and social studies while supporting California NGSS and Common Core standards.
- Lead student groups and chaperones safely and effectively through shipboard learning spaces, maintaining clear behavioral expectations and strong classroom management.
- Adapt and differentiate instructional strategies to meet the needs of different ages, learning styles, and group sizes.
- Communicate historical, technical, and scientific information accurately, clearly, and engagingly to young audiences.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Education/Experience:
- Pass Live Scan Background check.
- Associates/bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least one (1) year of teaching experience or equivalent informal education experience.
- Classroom and Virtual Classroom management skills
- Skill in communicating technical, historical, and scientific concepts in a clear and engaging way
- Enjoy working with elementary, middle, and high school students.
- Spanish as a second language is a plus.
Working Conditions
- Job Conditions/Work Location: Work is performed onboard an aircraft carrier.
- Physical Requirements: Frequent climbing up/downstairs and crew ladders; ability to bend and stoop to lift, move and/or retrieve objects, artifacts, and teaching materials; pull, push, lift, and carry up to 20 lbs.; reach both above and below shoulder height
