Overview

Founded in 1994, Surveying And Mapping, LLC (SAM) is a nationwide leader in geospatial and construction-phase solutions. With more than 50 offices and 1,600 professionals, we deliver the scale, technology, and expertise needed to support projects of any size. SAM streamlines project delivery through a single, coordinated team, offering in-house capabilities across land surveying, aerial mapping, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), utility coordination (UC), GIS, BIM, and construction engineering inspection (CEI).

By combining advanced technology, digital workflows, and decades of experience, we provide accurate, actionable data that helps clients move critical infrastructure projects forward with confidence. At SAM, you’ll be part of a team that values innovation, growth, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the built environment.

Responsibilities

SAM is seeking a licensed Staff Surveyor to join our growing team in the Pittsburgh area. The office position is for a mid-level, Pennsylvania Professional Licensed Surveyor (PLS) to focus on all technical aspects of a project with emphasis on final deliverables and QA/QC. This role can be a remote, hybrid, or office position in the Pittsburgh office.

We are seeking to connect with licensed survey professionals across a variety of experience levels and backgrounds who are passionate about delivering high-quality survey services and contributing to the success of our clients and teams.

This role will not require project management or field staff oversight, rather it focuses on delivering superior products for all technical tasks of surveying. Whether supporting pipelines, transmission lines, substations, renewable energy facilities, or large-scale utility programs, you will play a key role in delivering accurate survey data that drives our clients’ critical infrastructure decisions.

We are eager to learn more about your surveying experience and explore where you may best fit within our growing organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and oversee the delivery of superior products for boundary, easement and plat production, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, right-of-way, construction, control, LiDAR, and reality capture surveys.
  • Analyze and interpret deeds, plats, boundary evidence, parcel records, and right-of-way documentation to determine definitive property boundaries and legal easements.
  • Establish, verify, and maintain survey control networks, and oversee and verify field data collection using RTK GNSS, total stations, digital levels, and conventional survey methodologies.
  • Perform routine and complex mathematical survey calculations, coordinate geometry, and control adjustments.
  • Prepare, review, and finalize legal descriptions, and easement documents. Serve as the final quality reviewer and signature authority for survey deliverables.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of field data, calculations, CADD deliverables, and final survey products.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable state regulations, company standards, and industry best practices.

Qualifications
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Pennsylvania, or the ability to obtain Pennsylvania licensure through reciprocity within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with topographic, boundary, construction, utility, control, and ROW surveying methodologies appropriate to your career level.
  • Strong knowledge of boundary law, deed interpretation, easements, ALTA/NSPS standards, and land development surveys.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software and technology such as Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, MicroStation, Carlson, Leica, Trimble, or similar platforms is preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
