Accountabilities:

The Outpatient Coding Consultant is responsible for reviewing medical records, applying coding expertise, and ensuring documentation accurately reflects diagnoses and procedures. The role requires strong attention to detail, compliance awareness, and the ability to work efficiently in a remote healthcare environment.

  • Review medical records and assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes based on clinical documentation.
  • Assign and sequence codes appropriately while ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and standards.
  • Determine appropriate discharge dispositions and abstract coded data for healthcare reporting requirements.
  • Maintain high coding accuracy standards and meet productivity expectations established by the team.
  • Identify documentation improvement opportunities and communicate coding concerns to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff, management, and internal teams regarding clinical documentation and reimbursement-related questions.
  • Support quality initiatives by identifying trends, errors, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Participate in ongoing education sessions, maintain professional credentials, and complete required compliance training.
  • Follow professional coding ethics, organizational policies, and healthcare information management standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, adaptability, and strong customer-service skills while working remotely.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a credentialed coding professional with strong knowledge of outpatient medical coding practices and healthcare documentation. Successful candidates will demonstrate accuracy, independence, communication skills, and the ability to manage complex coding assignments.

  • AHIMA certification such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or AAPC certification such as CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, or CRC.
  • 3+ years of medical coding experience in a hospital, outpatient setting, or coding consulting environment.
  • Experience with outpatient coding specialties such as same-day surgery, observation, emergency department, injections/infusions, ancillary services, and E/M leveling.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, coding guidelines, and healthcare reimbursement processes.
  • Experience using computerized encoding and abstracting software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
  • Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy and productivity standards.
  • Commitment to completing annual HIPAA training and other required compliance assessments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
