About You

You are a wildlife ecologist with experience supporting wildlife and habitat conservation projects throughout California with knowledge of regional species, habitats, regulatory requirements, and habitat conservation plans. You are looking for on-call, seasonal, or project hire work in the San Joaquin Valley, Antelope Valley, and Central Coast, California.

Your background includes conducting special-status wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, biological monitoring, and conservation land management activities. You have supported federal and California Endangered Species Act permitting processes and prepared biological resource documentation. You have field experience with a variety of sensitive species and enjoy combining fieldwork, data analysis, and technical reporting to help achieve successful conservation and regulatory outcomes. A lifelong learner, you want to keep growing intellectually and professionally. About the Job

We are currently seeking wildlife field biologists and staff ecologists for projects in the San Joaquin Valley, Antelope Valley, and Central Coast, California as part of a team with other wildlife ecologists and experts in botany, land management, conservation planning, ecological restoration, and landscape architecture.

Our staff-level ecologists spend time both in the field and in the office. When in the field, you may conduct surveys and monitor for special-status wildlife and plant species, serve in the role of an agency-approved designated monitor or biologist for specific projects, complete habitat assessments, and assist with research and data collection. When not in the field, you’ll contribute to biological resource reports, support processes to obtain regulatory permits, and build your consulting skills and expertise by collaborating with senior ecologists both in person and online.

This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on the candidate’s location and the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting surveys, assessments, and monitoring for special-status wildlife and plant species
  • Supporting transportation, solar energy, land management, and conservation projects throughout the region
  • Performing habitat assessments, ecological research, and field data collection
  • Collecting, managing, and analyzing biological data to support project planning and reporting
  • Applying critical thinking to develop project-specific approaches that benefit the environment in collaboration with senior ecologists
  • Conducting surveys, population monitoring, and permit acquisition for projects involving rare plants and wildlife species including San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, Tipton’s kangaroo rat, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, burrowing owl, California tiger salamander, and/or Swainson’s hawk
  • Conducting endangered and threatened species surveys and assessments, preconstruction surveys and monitoring; and conservation land assessment, preservation, and management
Requirements:

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biological studies, natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or related discipline.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 2+ years of experience monitoring and conducting field surveys for field biologist-level candidates; 4+ years for staff-level
  • Experience with a variety of special-status wildlife species and their habitats in the greater Central Valley, desert, and/ or Central Coast, California, specifically with one or more of the following: San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, Tipton’s kangaroo rat, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, burrowing owl, and/or Swainson’s hawk
  • Proficiency at identifying nesting raptors and/or other birds
  • Experience with field data entry on mobile devices
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A desire to grow both intellectually and professionally
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers

Compensation is commensurate with experience and internal equity, within the listed range.
