Distributed Systems Engineer 5 - Pricing, Catalog and Offers

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Distributed Systems Engineer 5 - Pricing, Catalog and Offers based in United States.

This is a senior-level distributed systems engineering role focused on the critical infrastructure behind global pricing, catalog, and subscription commerce experiences.
You will help build and evolve Tier-0 services supporting approximately 330 million members across more than 190 countries.
The role combines product-facing engineering with deep platform challenges around scale, consistency, reliability, and performance.
You will partner with product managers, designers, and data scientists to deliver experiences that influence acquisition, retention, and monetization.
You will also tackle complex distributed systems problems involving race conditions, consistency guarantees, transactions, and throughput optimization.
With significant ownership over production systems, you will contribute to operational excellence and participate in an on-call rotation.
This is an opportunity to shape foundational commerce infrastructure in a highly autonomous, technically rigorous, and globally impactful environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Build and evolve distributed systems: Design, develop, and operate resilient, highly scalable, low-latency services supporting pricing, product catalogs, promotional offers, and subscription transactions at global scale.
  • Deliver commerce capabilities: Partner with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate business opportunities into scalable technical solutions that support acquisition, retention, and new commerce experiences.
  • Solve complex distributed systems challenges: Address race conditions, consistency guarantees, distributed transactions, throughput optimization, and other correctness and scalability challenges across critical services.
  • Strengthen platform infrastructure: Evolve foundational systems to support an expanding commerce ecosystem, including advertising, gaming, live streaming, and other emerging experiences.
  • Own production reliability: Take end-to-end responsibility for the reliability, availability, and performance of Tier-0 services, including participation in production on-call and incident response.
  • Lead complex engineering initiatives: Take projects from initial concept through implementation and delivery, proactively identifying opportunities to improve critical systems and engineering practices.
  • Translate ambiguity into solutions: Work from broad or evolving business objectives to define clear, maintainable, and scalable technical architectures.
  • Collaborate across functions: Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, risks, and system behavior effectively with both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • Senior distributed systems experience: 10+ years of experience building and operating resilient, high-scale, low-latency distributed systems in production environments.
  • Strong systems expertise: Demonstrated experience solving difficult correctness and reliability problems involving race conditions, eventual consistency, distributed transactions, and high-throughput architectures.
  • Platform mindset: Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into practical, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Engineering leadership: Proven ability to take extreme ownership of a technical domain and lead complex engineering projects from inception through production.
  • Cross-functional communication: Strong collaboration skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to product, design, data, and business partners.
  • Programming expertise: Professional experience with one or more modern programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, C#, or Scala.
  • Distributed technology experience: Familiarity with technologies such as Kafka, Elasticsearch, Hive, AWS, Presto, Spark SQL, or Apache Flink is highly valued.
  • API development: Experience designing and implementing gRPC, GraphQL, or RESTful APIs.
  • Data infrastructure: Experience with SQL and NoSQL, including multi-region data stores such as Cassandra, Amazon Aurora, or Memcached.
  • Operational excellence: Comfort with production on-call responsibilities, incident response, and maintaining highly critical services.
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
Benefits:
  • Annual compensation: $388,000–$619,000 USD, with the range varying based on location, job family, background, skills, and experience.
  • Compensation flexibility: Annual compensation is generally structured as salary and stock options, allowing employees to choose how much compensation they receive in each form.
  • Health coverage: Comprehensive health plans, including support for physical and mental health.
  • Retirement: 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching.
  • Equity: Stock option program.
  • Financial and wellness support: Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), disability programs, and life and serious injury benefits.
  • Family benefits: Family-forming benefits and paid leave programs.
  • Time off: Flexible time off for full-time salaried employees.
  • Inclusive environment: A culture focused on freedom, responsibility, diversity, inclusion, and meaningful collaboration.
  • Flexible work: Fully remote position within the United States.
