Job Description

Development Team Lead

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Development Team Lead based in Australia.

We are seeking a hands-on technical leader to guide a small engineering team while continuing to contribute deeply to software development.
This player-coach role combines advanced engineering, team mentorship, and technical leadership within a distributed remote environment.
You will help shape the future of a data-driven platform that supports critical business workflows across global markets.
The role offers significant ownership, with the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices, and AI-assisted development strategies.
You will work on complex integrations, scalable systems, and modern software delivery approaches while helping engineers grow professionally.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced developer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems and building high-performing teams.

Accountabilities:

As a Development Team Lead, you will combine senior-level engineering responsibilities with people leadership, helping drive technical excellence, delivery quality, and team growth. You will act as a key contributor in shaping engineering practices while remaining actively involved in building and improving software solutions.

  • Lead and mentor a team of developers through regular one-on-ones, performance discussions, career development planning, and ongoing coaching.
  • Remain highly hands-on by designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production-grade software using .NET, C#, and SQL Server.
  • Take ownership of complex technical challenges, delivering features and services from design through deployment and ongoing operation.
  • Drive technical decision-making, architecture discussions, and engineering standards by evaluating trade-offs and choosing pragmatic solutions.
  • Establish best practices for AI-assisted development, including the adoption of agentic coding workflows, prompt strategies, tooling improvements, and quality safeguards.
  • Guide the team in using AI development tools to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and engineering efficiency.
  • Lead the design and delivery of reliable integrations with external APIs, data sources, and customer systems across global markets.
  • Define patterns for resilient integrations, including monitoring, error handling, scalability, and operational reliability.
  • Own delivery planning, prioritisation, and removal of technical blockers in collaboration with product and technical leadership.
  • Promote strong engineering practices across testing, CI/CD, documentation, deployment processes, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate effectively with distributed teams across multiple regions, maintaining clear communication and strong technical documentation.
Requirements:

We are looking for an experienced software engineer who combines strong technical expertise with leadership capability and a passion for developing people. The ideal candidate is comfortable balancing hands-on coding with team ownership and technical direction.

  • 7–10 years of professional software development experience with strong current expertise in .NET and C#.
  • Proven experience leading, mentoring, managing, or coaching software engineers.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server, including queries, stored procedures, and relational data modelling.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and consuming REST APIs and integrating with third-party systems.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions.
  • Strong understanding of system design, architecture principles, and technical decision-making.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug complex distributed systems effectively.
  • Experience working with cloud-based environments and modern software delivery practices.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly within remote and asynchronous teams.
  • Ability to balance technical contribution with leadership responsibilities in a player-coach environment.
  • Experience with Azure services, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, event-driven architectures, or Infrastructure-as-Code is a plus.
  • Experience in regulated industries such as fintech, healthcare, government technology, or compliance-focused environments is beneficial.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote, flexible working environment with autonomy over your schedule.
  • Opportunity to work in a high-trust engineering culture with low bureaucracy and meaningful ownership.
  • Competitive salary based on experience and technical expertise.
  • Genuine player-coach role allowing you to remain deeply technical while developing a team.
  • Direct collaboration with senior technical leadership and influence over platform evolution.
  • Opportunity to work on complex global data systems supporting critical business processes.
  • Exposure to modern AI-first engineering practices and the chance to shape how teams use emerging development technologies.
  • Small, experienced engineering team with strong collaboration across international locations.
  • Flexible asynchronous work practices supported by modern collaboration tools.
  • Opportunity to improve engineering processes, architecture, and delivery standards.
