Job Description

Cultural Resources/Architectural Historian and Senior Project Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Cultural Resources/Architectural Historian and Senior Project Manager based in the United States.

This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape and expand cultural resources services across the Southeastern United States.
You will combine architectural history expertise, regulatory knowledge, and project management experience to deliver complex cultural resources programs.
Working closely with archaeological specialists and multidisciplinary teams, you will lead projects from initial surveys and evaluations through consultation, effects assessments, and mitigation.
The position also plays a central role in business development, client relationship management, and strategic growth.
You will serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients and agencies while guiding projects through federal and state historic preservation requirements.
As the practice grows, you will mentor emerging professionals, support recruitment, and help establish consistent technical standards and best practices.
This is a remote opportunity for an experienced professional seeking meaningful influence over projects that protect historic resources and support community development.

Accountabilities

You will lead the delivery and growth of cultural resources and built environment services throughout the Southeast, combining technical expertise with strategic, commercial, and people leadership responsibilities.

  • Partner with the Southeast Lead Archaeologist to develop and implement a shared growth strategy, identify target clients and markets, and expand an integrated cultural resources offering.

  • Coordinate with planners, environmental specialists, archaeologists, and regional teams to support multidisciplinary projects and business development opportunities.

  • Lead cultural resources projects under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, 36 CFR Part 800, Section 4(f), NEPA, and applicable state review requirements.

  • Assess potential effects on historic properties and prepare Findings of Effect and other technical documentation for federal and state agencies.

  • Lead consultation and build consensus with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), federal agencies, Tribes, local governments, and other consulting parties.

  • Negotiate and prepare Memoranda of Agreement and Programmatic Agreements, and develop mitigation strategies such as HABS/HAER/HALS documentation, historic context studies, National Register nominations, interpretive materials, and public outreach.

  • Oversee cultural resources surveys, historic property evaluations, and documentation for complex resources, including bridges, roadways, canals, railroads, historic districts, and mid-twentieth-century developments.

  • Apply the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and relevant federal, state, and local preservation requirements.

  • Navigate regional historic resource inventories and SHPO systems, including the Florida Master Site File, Georgia’s GNAHRGIS, and South Carolina’s ArchSite.

  • Prepare and oversee survey and evaluation reports, effects assessments, historic context statements, and cultural resources sections for NEPA documents, including Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements.

  • Provide senior-level technical reviews and maintain high standards for documentation, reporting, and data management.

  • Present project findings at agency, public, and historic preservation board meetings.

  • Mentor and develop early- and mid-career professionals, guide technical approaches, delegate work, and contribute to internal training.

  • Support staffing plans and recruitment as the Southeast practice expands, with the opportunity to assume formal staff-supervision responsibilities.

  • Build long-term client and agency relationships, identify new opportunities, and promote collaboration and cross-selling across service lines.

  • Lead business development activities, prepare proposals and scopes of work, develop cost estimates, and support contract pursuits.

  • Manage projects from initiation through completion, overseeing budgets, schedules, deliverables, invoicing, project status, and staff utilization.

  • Maintain regular communication with clients and internal project managers to ensure successful project delivery.

The ideal candidate is an established architectural history and cultural resources professional with extensive experience in historic preservation, federal permitting, regulatory compliance, and project leadership, particularly across the Southeastern United States.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 25 or more years of experience in cultural resources management, architectural history, and federal permitting in the Southeastern United States.

  • Experience working with multiple Southeastern SHPOs and familiarity with their survey and reporting guidelines.

  • Annual salary range of $135,000–$155,000, depending on experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
