About This Position

Reports to: Director of Residential Services

Overall Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Services and Residential Services Specialist, the Residential Service Floater is responsible for the health and safety of all assigned students during the overnight hours. Specifically, the Residential Services Floater is responsible for the clinical and medical management of each student in the residence and must remain awake during the overnight hours to ensure students’ safety. Additionally, they are responsible for assisting the Residential Services Specialist as needed with personnel management of the residential counselors and serving as the administrator-in-charge of the program during the overnight hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Educational/Clinical

    • Residential Services Floater is required to communicate with Res Services prior to each scheduled shift to receive their assignment.
    • Remain awake and alert at all times while on duty; continuously monitor the health, safety and well-being of each student.
    • Thorough knowledge and competent implementation of all student educational programs and behavior management guidelines.
    • Diligent implementation of all medical, safety, and emergency procedures.
    • Record and complete all necessary behavioral and educational research data accurately and in a timely fashion, as specified by the Program Specialist, Residential Coordinator and/or Overnight Supervisor.
    • Complete all assigned direct teaching duties during early evening (7:00-8:00 p.m.) weekends and/or early morning (7:00-8:00 a.m.) weekday
    • Supervise all residences to ensure that the program is operating in a safe and orderly manner that student schedules are followed (as appropriate), and clinical management guidelines and student-specific programming are correctly implemented.
    • Assist teachers and counselors with any student management problems that arise and circulate among all residences on a regular basis.
  • Assess and delegate responsibility in all medical and clinical emergencies and take charge of decision-making during emergency situations. This includes responsibility for calls to the Clinical/Medical beeper and use of emergency equipment.
  • Coordinate all staff and scheduling problems with senior staff from each specific team. Attempt to cover all sick calls by adjusting team schedules and/or recruiting overtime. When a sick call or absence is for a residential counselor, will attempt until 10:00 a.m. to recruit personnel to cover the opening.
  • Assist with any parent problems or concerns; notify the clinical administrator on call when necessary.
  • Assist the residential services specialist in the training and retraining of residential counselors, including training in general procedures (e.g. residential reporting guidelines) and specific student management procedures.
  • Assist the Residential Services Specialist with evaluation and corrective feedback for residential counselors.

Schedule

  • The Residential Services Floater will be scheduled to a specific residence or as an administrator-in-charge based on the priority of need of the program. This schedule will be determined on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Sunday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Saturday primarily working in any residence as needed to help cover vacancies in the residential program and/or in the Residential Services department on a weekly basis

Physical:

The physical requirements here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of all CALM-Physical procedures.

  • Protective holds, movements and carries
  • Blocking and redirecting student movements against the student’s weight (40-250 pounds)
  • Physical interventions in response to aggressive and self-injurious behavior
  • Ability to move quickly and confidently to intervene in situations when protective holds and/or movements are deemed necessary
  • Ability to pursue a bolting student
  • Successful completion of CALM training (non-violent self-defense)
    • Including but not limited to: pivoting, knee squats, shuffling front and backwards, carrying people, assisting a person to the floor, stabilizing people in a standing, seated, prone and supine positions.

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and the Res Services Floater will also perform other reasonably related duties as requested by the Director of Residential Services or his/her designee.
