Job Description
Saint John's Preparatory School invites applications for the part-time, non-benefit eligible position of Assistant Boys Basketball Coaches to begin October 2026.
Since its founding in 1857, Saint John’s Preparatory School has provided exceptional education in the Catholic Benedictine tradition. Saint John's Preparatory School is a Catholic/Benedictine, co-educational, day and boarding college preparatory school for students in grades 6-12, with boarding options beginning in the 9th grade. Saint John's Prep is located on the 3,000 acres of woods and lakes of Saint John's University's campus in central Minnesota.
Reporting to the Head Coach, in conjunction with the Activities Director, the Assistant Coach carries out the aims and objectives of the activity as outlined by the Head Coach. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. This Assistant Coach supervises athletes and the team assigned and assumes supervising control over all athletes in program when such control is needed.

The posted wage represents OSB's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.
- Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
- Possesses knowledge of the existing system employed by the Head Coach and/or the capacity to learn the system.
- Teaches fundamentals of the sport, including rules and regulations and proper techniques for safe play as outlined by the Head Coach and the MSHSL.
- Creates a safe/positive environment and maintains discipline and cooperation.
- Assists in directing student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
- In conjunction with the Head Coach and other school personnel determines consequences and discipline when rules and expectations are violated and communicates the consequences to parents as determined by the Head Coach/school personnel.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the head coach in game and practice scheduling.
- Understands the proper administration line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
- Assists in necessary preparation to hold scheduled games and practices.
- Assists in ensuring all MSHSL eligibility requirements are completed by the athletes.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned sites.
- Assists the Head Coach with all equipment check out/check in procedures.
- Recommends to the Head Coach budgetary items needed.
- Assists in monitoring locker rooms and any facilities/grounds used before and after practices and games, ensuring general cleanliness of the facility/grounds.
- Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property.
- Prepares game summaries and other communication for school communication channels as directed.
- Works with the Head Coach maintaining a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
- Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments assigned.
- Arrives at assigned times prepared to conduct practice or game.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
- Communicates in a professional manner with other coaches recognizing that the Head Coach determines the direction of the program. Thoughts and opinions regarding the program should always be expressed in private meetings and never in public settings.
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and other resources made available by the Head Coach.
- Attends the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program as determined by the Head Coach.
- Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Head Coach.
- Experience coaching and/or participation in the activity.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all constituencies.
- Completion of all Minnesota State High School League On-Line Course requirements.
