Job Description
**IT Support & Security Technician (9-Month Temporary, Remote)**
- Location: Remote (US-based)
- Work Arrangement: Fully remote
- Duration: 9-month temporary assignment
- Department: Managed Services
- Reports To: IT Manager
**Position Summary**
Markgraf Consulting is seeking an IT Support & Security Technician for a 9-month temporary, fully remote assignment to support day-to-day IT operations with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity, vulnerability patching, and managed services delivery. This role supports both internal users and managed services clients, contributing to a secure, well-patched, and well-monitored environment across endpoints, servers, and core business applications.
This role is ideal for someone who is organized, security-minded, technically capable, and comfortable working a mix of end-user support, account administration, patch management, and routine security operations tasks within established standards. The technician will resolve routine technical issues, fulfill access and provisioning requests, execute and verify patching cycles, monitor security tooling, document work clearly, and escalate more complex matters when needed.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**
- Respond to internal and managed services support requests submitted through the ticketing system, email, chat, or phone, meeting service-level expectations.
- Execute routine vulnerability patching and update cycles for Windows servers, endpoints, and supported third-party applications, following established change management and maintenance window procedures.
- Monitor endpoint protection, EDR, and other security tools for alerts; perform initial triage; remediate routine findings; and escalate confirmed or higher-severity events.
- Assist with vulnerability scanning activities, review scan output, and help prioritize and track remediation through resolution.
- Verify backup job health, investigate failures, and assist with restore testing as scheduled.
- Support remote monitoring and management (RMM) tooling, including agent deployment, health checks, and routine policy maintenance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve routine end-user issues involving hardware, software, printers, browsers, email, MFA, and general workstation support.
- Fulfill approved access control and provisioning requests in accordance with company and client security procedures.
- Perform routine account administration tasks such as password resets, MFA enrollment and recovery, shared mailbox updates, distribution list changes, and basic file or folder permission changes.
- Support onboarding and offboarding activities, including secure account setup, equipment preparation, access updates, and timely access revocation.
- Configure, deploy, and support end-user devices and standard business applications, applying baseline security configurations.
- Assist with IT asset tracking, license inventory, and general internal IT and MSP operations support.
- Maintain accurate ticket notes, runbooks, and internal knowledge base content with a focus on security and patching procedures.
- Escalate issues that fall outside standard procedures or require senior technical or security review.
- Follow established IT, security, and change management practices, including documentation of patching activities and security-relevant changes.
- Perform occasional simple website content updates in WordPress and Divi (text changes, image swaps, link and menu updates) on an as-needed basis.
**Qualifications**
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree, technical training, or relevant certifications preferred. Security-oriented certifications such as CompTIA Security+, ITF+, A+, or Network+ are a plus.
- 1-3 years of experience in IT support, help desk, desktop support, MSP technician work, or a similar internal support role preferred.
- Exposure to patch management tooling, endpoint protection or EDR platforms, RMM tools, and ticketing systems preferred.
- Experience working with user account provisioning, access requests, and ticket-based support processes preferred.
- Awareness of common cybersecurity concepts including phishing, malware, MFA, least privilege, and basic incident response.
- Basic experience with WordPress and Divi a plus, but not required.
- Experience working in a fully remote environment preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented procedures, particularly around security and change management.
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
- Ability to execute patching and security maintenance work accurately, on schedule, and with clear documentation.
- Ability to triage security alerts and recognize when an event warrants escalation rather than self-remediation.
- Ability to troubleshoot common end-user technical issues in a professional and efficient manner.
- Ability to provide excellent internal and client-facing customer service.
- Ability to manage routine provisioning and access-related requests with accuracy and discretion.
- Ability to prioritize work across multiple internal and client environments and communicate status clearly.
- Ability to recognize when escalation is needed and follow through appropriately.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while staying connected and responsive to team members, clients, and end users.
**Work Location, Schedule, and Duration**
This is a fully remote position open to candidates based in the United States. The assignment is a 9-month temporary engagement, with the possibility of extension or conversion based on business needs and performance, though neither is guaranteed.
The role generally follows standard business hours aligned with the Pacific Time Zone, with reasonable flexibility based on business needs. Some patching and maintenance work may be scheduled during defined off-hours maintenance windows; advance notice and schedule adjustments will be provided.
We understand that some candidates may be balancing school commitments, and we are willing to provide reasonable flexibility around class schedules, provided business needs and core responsibilities are met.
**Compensation**
Markgraf Consulting offers competitive hourly compensation for this temporary position. Specific rate details will be discussed during the hiring process. As a temporary role, this position is not eligible for company benefits.
**Additional Information**
- Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available.
- Candidates must be able to provide a reliable home work environment with adequate internet connectivity. Required equipment will be provided by Markgraf Consulting for the duration of the assignment and returned at its conclusion.
