About This Position

The Merrimack Police Department is looking to hire a Crossing Guard to control traffic at the corner of Turkey Hill Road and Amherst Road during the morning commute Monday - Friday, between 7am and 9am.

Crossing Guards are responsible for regulating the flow of traffic, controlling and assisting turning vehicles, coordinating the flow of traffic with adjacent intersections, assist pedestrians and assist emergency vehicles through traffic. It may also be necessary to conduct manual operation of traffic control signs during times of special events, the devices are malfunctioning or during inclement weather / hazardous roadway condition. When acting as School Crossing Guard, is responsible for directing traffic at assigned crossing post to protect children and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic. Their authority is limited to pedestrian, motor vehicle traffic direction and control at their assigned locations.

  1. Reports directly to any assigned post on time and remains until the conclusion of the assignment.
  2. Regulate the flow of traffic, control and assist turning vehicles, coordinate the flow of traffic with adjacent intersections, assist pedestrians and assist emergency vehicles through traffic.
  3. When assigned to perform school crossing guard duties, must insure children and pedestrians use the proper crossing locations and that children are not on the street while traffic is moving.
  4. Be alert for any potential traffic hazards in the area of the post. Report any such traffic hazards to the patrol duty supervisor immediately.
  5. To be responsible to the Patrol Captain and or the daily duty supervisor.
  6. Wear only the uniform and equipment issued or authorized by the Merrimack Police Department in a manner that promotes the Merrimack Police Department as a professional organization.
  7. Wear appropriate safety equipment at all times while performing the crossing guard function.
  8. Attend training sessions or meetings as required by the department.
  9. Perform such duties that may be requested by the Chief of Police or his designee.
  10. At all times while performing the crossing guard function act in a manner appropriate with the professional conduct expected of members of the Merrimack Police Department.

Have a general working knowledge of traffic and pedestrian control. The ability to recognize hazardous situations and react to provide safe movement of traffic and pedestrians. The ability to remain calm under stressful situations while reacting calmly and quickly to recognize when a hazardous situation needs to be reported to a duty supervisor.
Must have a high school diploma, the equivalent or satisfactory work experience in providing public safety with public contact.
