About This Position
Avalon Risk Management (“Avalon”) is a specialty insurance broker with offices throughout the U.S. and Canada. We focus on the unique and exciting world of risk management and insurance products for the international trade and logistics industry. Avalon is a privately held company owned by our founding management team. We are looking for a Claims Support Specialist to join our Transportation Claims department. This full-time non-exempt (hourly) position will work from our headquarters located at 200 N. Martingale Rd., Ste. 700, Schaumburg, Illinois 60173.
Our new Claims Support Specialist will assist our Transportation (cargo) claims team, insureds, and insurance markets by setting up claims and handling intake tasks associated with claim adjudication. The support specialist will gather appropriate documents to help the team evaluate a loss, along with other duties as assigned.
Essential responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Claim intake coordination and inbox management. When new claims come in, read and sort emails based on claim type and assign an adjuster. Our specialist will take ownership of the intake process.
- When existing claim documentation is received, the Claims Support Specialist will verify the claim adjuster handling the claim and forward the correspondence to them. The claim adjuster will follow up with customers for any missing documents. As claims progress, support the adjusters by recording updates in our system of record.
- Assist the Claims team with special projects including audits, complaints, data gathering for presentations, etc., and handling inbound phone calls to the department.
- Work with Corporate Counsel on licensing tasks including vendor database accuracy, audits, obtaining documents, vendor invoice reconciliations, etc.
- Assist Corporate Counsel with compliance filings related to state regulations, annual reports, new registrations, etc.
- Support reporting activities via data entry and Excel editing.
- Monitor the separate inbox for legal fees for monthly legal fee invoices and set those up for payment by ACCT.
- General department support as needed, including scanning and mailing.
Our ideal candidate has at least 3 years of professional office support or customer service experience, such as supporting insurance policies (e.g., claims or underwriting intake), customer service, medical billing, etc. Direct insurance experience is a plus, and so is shipping experience (for example, you know what a Bill of Lading is). We will train those with the right transferable skills. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented, and be confident in their organizational skills. This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position with a starting base compensation range of $20.00 - $23.00 per hour, depending on experience.
