About This Position

Job Summary:

The Trauma Surgeon is prepared by education to function independently in the care of the acute surgical and trauma patient. The surgeon complies with all the policies and procedures of the Department of Trauma and of the facility. He/She is directly accountable to the Medical Director of Trauma.

Performance Expectations:

His/her role includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Rounding on trauma service patients daily; completing documentation of assessment; following established protocols to assure expected patient outcomes.
  • Completing established departmental tool for hand off of patient information to an incoming surgeon
  • Responding to Emergency Department activation within the prescribed 30 minutes (preferably 15 minutes) for ALPHA designation and 45 minutes for BRAVO designation, with exclusions as noted in Trauma Policies Manual
  • Presenting for their assigned shift in a timely manner
  • Submitting charges for daily work on the Charge tab within the patient’s chart in EPIC
  • Comply with quality measures established within the department
  • Complete annual educational offering to staff
  • Complete annual educational offering of trauma related topics
  • Comply with 75% attendance expectation for quarterly trauma meetings
  • Seeing patients in Trauma Surgery Clinic for evaluation/continuation of care

Qualifications:

Education/Skills:

Graduate of a medical school approved by American Medical Association is required. Residency training in an ACGME certified training program required. Board certification/eligibility in Surgery required. Completion of trauma/critical care fellowship preferred.

Work Experience:

Completion of general surgery residency with board certification/eligibility required. Completion of trauma/critical care fellowship or additional experience in ICU care preferred.

Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE

  • Current license to practice medicine in the State of Mississippi
  • Eligible for Forrest General Hospital Malpractice Insurance
  • Board certified/eligible in Surgery

Additional Certification/Licensure - Obtained based on the required timeframe below

  • Current ATLS Certification

Preferred

Mental Demands:

Maximum mental demands dealing with major trauma, the most sick surgical and trauma patients.
