10-month position

Position Overview

As Forman School approaches its centennial celebration and opens the doors to its new Cognition and Learning Building and Diagnostic Center, there has never been a better time to join a visionary team of leaders and educators, taking the science of learning and strengths of neurodiverse learners to the next level.

Forman School seeks a colleague to join the Science Department. A Science teacher at Forman develops a love of Science and a curiosity about the physical world around them. The ideal candidate aims to develop students’ scientific knowledge and skills in safe and innovative lab-based courses. The ideal candidate should be forward-thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach five sections of courses in the Science Department
  • Courses taught will include a combination of Chemistry, Chemistry Honors, Advanced Chemistry Honors and potentially one other course depending on the needs of the schedule
  • Create a positive learning environment for the acquisition of scientific knowledge and skills
  • Plan, develop, and utilize lab-based lessons safely and effectively to incorporate experimentation, observation, and problem-solving
  • Utilize a diverse array of activities, materials, media, and techniques to create a rich educational experience
  • Create lesson plans and modify them accordingly throughout the year
  • Ability to develop curricula that provides a robust experiential learning experience that promotes deeper thinking
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and projects
  • Implement best practices to support the needs of students with diagnosed learning differences
  • Provide consistent, timely, and constructive feedback both in writing and verbally
  • Foster an environment in which students learn to think critically and independently
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of different constituencies in writing and verbally
  • Demonstrate patience and empathy with adolescents and focus on fully developing well-rounded individuals
  • Implement best practices to support the needs of students with diagnosed learning differences
  • Attend department meetings and other meetings as assigned
  • Serve as a member of a dorm family
  • Coach one season of an extracurricular activity
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Educational and Experiential Background and Credentials

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • 3+ years of teaching experience
  • Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration
  • Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate well and effectively with colleagues, parents, and students alike

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field
  • Prior experience working with students with diagnosed learning differences
  • Prior experience in a boarding school setting

Other Expectations:

This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of school life.
