Job Description

Clinical Specialist Registered Nurse (RN)- Intensive Care Unit

The RN Clinical Specialist participates in the development of and is responsible for the implementation of unit-based orientation, education, and competency programs that support the delivery of safe, high-quality critical care to adult inpatients. These programs include novice and experienced nurse orientation and licensed nursing assistant orientation and professional development. Additionally, maintains clinical practice in the critical care environment to provide just-in-time support to clinical staff.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Education:

BSN required Specialty certification in critical care field (CCRN, CEN, etc.) preferred

Minimum Work Experience:

Five years of clinical experience required, at least three years in critical care

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Ability to obtain Vermont state Registered Nurse licensure

RN license required by date of employment

BLS, ACLS required within 90 days of hire

Key Responsibilities

  • Orientation and onboarding
    1. Coordinates and implements unit-based education programs for nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, LNAs, patient care assistants, and others) new to organization or unit
    2. Delivers training and ensures new staff competency regarding organizational systems, including but not limited to point of care testing, medication dispensing systems, electronic health record
  • Competency management
    1. Manages competencies for nursing staff on assigned unit
    2. Collaborates with unit leadership to identify appropriate competencies and ensure program is carried out in a timely and coordinated fashion
    3. Participates in the development and implementation of staff competencies based on needs assessment, regulatory requirements, policy/procedure changes, new equipment, and quality metrics
  • Education
    1. Conducts and participates in practice gap analysis and learning needs assessments
    2. Participates in the development of, implements and evaluates education programs related to orientation, competency, and continuing nursing education
    3. Participates in the development of new educational programs as identified through needs assessment, gap analyses, or regulatory requirements
  • Role Development
    1. Implements and maintains unit-based orientation programs for new to practice staff and staff transitioning from one specialty or role to another in alignment with accreditation criteria
    2. Participates in the development of and implements initial and ongoing preceptor development programs
    3. Supports succession planning
    4. Conducts career coaching
    5. Supports clinical advancement models
  • Collaboration
    1. Collaborates with other departments to facilitate high quality, cost effective patient care
    2. Participates in the development of and implements interprofessional education in collaboration with interprofessional colleagues
    3. Participates in interprofessional committees
    4. Supports and is a champion for excellence initiatives and shared governance
  • Inquire
    1. Participates in research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives
    2. Collects, analyzes and presents data related to educational programs
