About This Position
NUTRITIONIST II
HEALTH DEPARTMENT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This employee works to promote healthy behaviors to groups or individuals through nutrition assessment, nutrition education and documentation of services provided in the Caldwell County Health Department and in the local community. They work with all health department staff to implement the NC WIC program according to program policies.
Public Health is a first responder agency for natural disasters (e.g. hurricanes, tornados, floods, winter storms), naturally occurring infectious disease outbreaks (e.g. influenza, SARS), technological hazards (hazardous materials releases, critical infrastructure disruptions), and terrorist incidents. This position, like all other positions within the Department may be required to participate in any emergency response activities as deemed necessary by the Health Director or his/her designee. Availability during emergencies and exercises is required. Appropriate ICS courses are completed as applicable to position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED
Clinical
- Skillfully interview, educate, and assess nutrition status of WIC clients.
- Document in client’s medical record as directed to meet WIC guidelines and accurately represent assessment and education provided for WIC clients.
- Refer clients to other health and social services when needs are beyond scope of practice
- Provide breastfeeding assistance to WIC clients as needed
- Participates in QA activities as assigned
- Assists WIC Interviewers with clerical tasks, data entry, patient check-in, and documenting program eligibility as assigned
Education
- Provide community education as needed for the purpose of promoting good health
- Assist in planning and carrying out nutrition activities for community education
- Assist in developing nutrition education for WIC participants
- Attends appropriate staff meetings, workshops, trainings and reads current professional literature
- Keep abreast of current research and legislative changes through nutrition journals, newsletters and other professional publications to maintain knowledge of nutrition
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Employee should have considerable knowledge of principles and practices in the field of nutrition and dietary assessment techniques, current research findings and trends, community resources and socio-economic groups. Employee should be skilled in conducting nutritional assessments and nutrition counseling while having the ability to gain rapport with patients, fellow workers and community agencies. Employee should be able to teach classes and deliver effective talks.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience. English and Spanish preferred.
