The Civil Service Employment Office is now accepting applications for the position of IT Technician for the City of Zanesville. This exam is open for consideration to all qualified and interested City employees and to the general public.
Position Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
- An Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or closely related field.
- Experience with Intel based PCs running Windows 10 or higher and Microsoft Office.
- An understanding of personal computer hardware, operating systems, application software, computer and network security principles and computer peripherals (printers, fax machines, desk and cell phones).
- Ability to analyze problems and identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Excellent teamwork, organizational, and problem solving skills.
- Effective communicator in writing, business presentations, and interpersonal communications.
- Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
Licensure or Certification Requirements
Valid Driver’s License
Distinguishing Job Characteristics
Under direction of the IT Administrator organizes and troubleshoots the City of Zanesville’s employees’ technology issues at the tier I level. Will help with developing and maintaining IT’s policies and procedures. Assist with maintaining the City of Zanesville’s technology assets. (Hardware and software)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- First Level of IT Support for the City of Zanesville.
- Data entry (management of data) – accurately prioritize, categorize, track and log calls, tickets, conversations, etc. following client or internal tracking protocols.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to hardware/software, password resets, Microsoft operating systems, security, desktop applications, and peripherals.
- Transport/haul, install, configure and maintain person computers, network cabling, phones and other devices as needed.
- Ability to maintain City of Zanesville assets in the asset management database.
- Assist with creating and maintaining employees’ access in multiple application databases.
- Respond to all Customer requests in timely and professional manner.
- Work closely with other team members to identify and suggest resolutions and improvements.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding information being processed, stored or accessed by end-users on the network.
- Continue to develop internal IT policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Operated
Various types of PCs/ laptops and software applications. To include but are not limited to Dell and/or HP. VoIP phone system, Fax, scanners, various printers and Anti-Virus protection applications.
Contact with Others
All City staff members that use the City’s computer systems. Various software and hardware vendors.
Confidential Data
Tax records, Court and Police records, and other computerized data retained in computer system which are not considered public record under Ohio laws.
Working Conditions
Good office working conditions. Majority of the time will be using some type of computer, printer, server, etc. Exposure to normal occupational hazards when consistently operating computers, including eye and wrist strain.
Usual Physical Demands

Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when reading a computer screen.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: Outstanding diagnostic, problem-solving and analytical skills. Good communications skills. Good knowledge of LAN/WAN networks. Common software and hardware (PCs/laptops, printer, desk phones, cell phones, fax machines, etc.)
Ability to: Develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisors, and the general public, maintain confidentiality of confidential or sensitive subject matters.
Skill in: Trouble shooting computer hardware and software issues; computer programming.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Submitting an Application
To be included in the exam process for the position of IT Technician, you must have submitted an electronic application by the deadline date. Submitted applications will be reviewed by the Civil Service Commission. As a result of their evaluation, applicants who have been approved to participate in the examination will be notified accordingly.
The Civil Service Exam will consist of a structured interview before interviewing panels. The eligible list will be arranged from highest to lowest based on the score of the structured interview. Applicants must pass on a scoring scale of at least 70%. Date of interview to be determined.
Credit for Military Service
Applicants who have been honorably discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for additional credit of 20% on their exam provided a passing score is obtained. Applicants must pass on a scoring scale of at least 70%. Copy of honorable discharge or Form DD214 can be submitted with the electronic application, but must be submitted before the exam. No credit is given if proof of discharge is submitted after examination date.
