About the Role:

The Lifeguard/Dockhand plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals utilizing aquatic facilities within an educational environment. This position requires vigilant supervision of swimming areas to prevent accidents and respond promptly to emergencies. The Lifeguard will also provide swim instruction and guidance to promote water safety and skill development among participants of all ages. Collaboration with other staff members is essential to maintain a secure and welcoming environment. Ultimately, the Lifeguard contributes to a positive recreational experience by combining safety expertise with effective communication and teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven swimming proficiency and ability to perform water rescues.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse populations.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in swim instruction or coaching within an educational or recreational setting.
  • Current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid from the American Red Cross or equivalent organization.
  • Additional certifications such as Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or advanced first aid training.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or similar software for creating educational materials or promotional content.
  • Previous experience working in educational services or community programs.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills demonstrated through prior roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor swimming areas continuously to identify and respond to potential hazards or emergencies.
  • Perform rescues and administer first aid or CPR/AED as necessary in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
  • Provide swim instruction and water safety education to individuals and groups, adapting techniques to various skill levels.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of pool facilities, including checking equipment and reporting maintenance needs.
  • Collaborate with team members to enforce facility rules and promote a safe, respectful environment for all patrons.
  • Assisting with the operation of marine activities including: tubing, kayaking and paddle boarding.
  • Assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of all power boats, kayaks, paddle boards as well as all waterfront equipment and facilities. This includes washing of boats and docks, small repairs, sanitizing, cleaning and other tasks as necessary.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with guests and coworkers.
  • Enforcing all rules and guidelines; ensuring the safety of all guests and coworkers.
  • Responding to any emergency situation including, but not limited to: drowning, injuries, adverse weather, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Swim instruction skills enable the Lifeguard to teach and reinforce water safety practices, enhancing participants' confidence and abilities. Teamwork is vital for coordinating with colleagues to maintain a secure environment and manage daily operations smoothly. Knowledge of American Red Cross protocols ensures adherence to nationally recognized safety standards. Additionally, familiarity with Adobe Photoshop can be utilized to develop engaging educational materials, supporting the broader mission of water safety education.
