About This Position

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential functions of this position satisfactorily. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of specialized heavy machinery used in the road striping and pavement marking industry. This includes striping trucks, thermoplastic equipment, spray systems, grinders, burners, air compressors, hydraulics, and support vehicles.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain road striping trucks, fleet vehicles, support equipment and pavement marking equipment including paint and bead delivery systems, thermoplastic kettles and burners, hydraulic systems, pumps and motors, air compressors and pneumatic systems, engines, transmissions, brakes, and drivetrains.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical failures in field and shop environments.
  • Respond to breakdowns and service calls at active job sites as needed.
  • Perform emergency repairs to keep striping operations moving safely and efficiently.
  • Provide on‑site mechanical support during peak striping seasons.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and DOT requirements.
  • Ensure equipment is safe, compliant, and job‑ready before deployment.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Complete maintenance and repair records accurately and on time.
  • Communicate equipment issues and repair needs to supervisors and operations staff.
  • Assist with parts inventory, ordering, and tracking.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting skills related to heavy equipment and specialty striping machinery.
  • In‑depth knowledge of road striping and pavement marking equipment, including paint spray systems, bead dispensers, thermoplastic kettles, burners, and grinders.
  • Proficiency in maintaining and repairing diesel and gas engines, transmissions, braking systems, and drivetrains.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, motors, hoses, and fittings.
  • Understanding of pneumatic systems, air compressors, and related controls.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical systems, including wiring, sensors, switches, and control panels.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and roadway safety requirements, including working near live traffic and night operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic diagrams.
  • Welding, fabrication, and metal repair skills preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize safety‑critical repairs.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with operations, supervisors, and field crews.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in shop and field environments.
  • Solid organizational skills for tracking repairs, parts usage, and maintenance records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2+ years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic (road striping or similar specialty equipment preferred).
  • Strong mechanical and hydraulic aptitude.
  • Can work in fast‑paced field conditions.
  • Understands the importance of safety, uptime, and quality in roadway operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, manuals, and technical documents.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance and major repairs.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and overtime during striping season.
