Job Description

Position Title: Medical Care Coordinator

Department: Adoption Center

Position Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Reports to: Medical Care Manager

Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, Occasional On-Call Shifts Required (40 Hours per week)

Starting Pay: $19.23 - $21.63 Hourly (Based on experience)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Coordinator is responsible for assisting with the management of medical care provided to animals in Blue Ridge Humane Society's care, including assisting with ASPCA Spay Neuter Alliance, Low-Cost Vaccine Clinics, and Safelight. Effective communication, organization, and animal handling are required. This position aims to keep pets with their families through support, intervention, and proactive community-based programming, while also ensuring proper medical care for shelter and foster animals. Knowledge of shelter medicine is required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Including but not limited to:

Medical Care

  • Adhere to the cleaning procedures and protocols for animal care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other animal care practices within the policies and guidelines of Blue Ridge Humane Society
  • Maintain appropriate medical records, documents, and data entry for foster and shelter animals.
  • Manage routine medical treatments and check ins for foster animals including contacting fosters, scheduling appointments and updating the animals' file.
  • Conduct the intake of animals entering our care by following the SOP medical protocol.
  • Assist the Medical Care Manager with medical assessments and treatments of shelter animals; this includes performing physical exams, vaccinating, parasite checks, performing diagnostic tests, and medicating animals.
  • Manages the medical care for animals in our care in the absence of the Medical Care Manager under the supervision of the Pathway Planning Director.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters regarding symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments.
  • Coordinate and transport animals to necessary vet visits with the guidance of the Medical Care Manager and/or Pathway Planning Director.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers in partnership to improve the quality of life for resident animals.
  • Maintain a humane attitude towards the animals in our care; must know of proper animal handling and restraint of animals.
  • Responsible for promptly notifying the supervisor when an animal shows signs of stress, injury, or illness.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and coordinate necessary ordering with the Medical Care Manager
  • Must show interest and motivation towards personal development, growth and learning with regards to animal welfare; this includes attending seminars/trainings and some extra reading and preparations.
  • Represents Blue Ridge Humane Society in a professional manner at all times in appearance and demeanor.
  • Assist in cleaning and other duties when needed.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs other duties as assigned.

Spay/Neuter and Community Support:

  • Assist with morning ASNA drop-offs, greeting clients, safely handling animals from the public and in-house to be properly crated for transport.
  • Greet clients, ensure proper paperwork completion for ASNA.
  • Operate a 15-passenger van for an imal transportation to and from clinics.
  • Communicate effectively to the Intake Manager of issues that arise with ASNA.
  • Maintain effective relationships with volunteers and BRHS staff.
  • Assist with Community Support with the Vaccination Clinic by providing support in check-in, check-out, safe and humane animal handling, and sharing vaccine information with pet owners.
  • Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times regardless of the situation or circumstance, and promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals and owners.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs other duties as assigned.

Work is evaluated by periodic checks for overall effectiveness and results achieved. Written evaluations are done at the end of the initial probationary and annually thereafter on the anniversary date. Operational guidelines are set forth by the Executive Director and presented in the Employee Handbook as well as in department Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required
  • Strong computer skills including various databases and proficiency in Microsoft Office application
  • Strong animal handling/restraint skills and working knowledge of animal behavior and medical issues
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team with co-workers and volunteers in a professional manner
  • Strong organizational, humane relations and communication skills, orally and written
  • Ability to work on initiative, balance multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Must be comfortable working with animals of varying temperaments in noisy conditions.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with the public, donors, volunteers, staff and management in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Good judgment when dealing with the public, decision making, and dealing with confidential information.
  • Ability to effectively handle difficult interpersonal situations, including tactfully handling of angry and upset individuals when necessary.
  • This position requires that the individual be able to stand, stoop, walk, crawl, kneel, crouch, and sit for periods of time. The ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. and maneuver large, cumbersome objects. This individual may be working with potential biohazards related to animal exposure (airborne allergens, contact reactions) and may be exposed to animal diseases and/or diseased animals. Must be able to work safely with a variety of cleaning materials.
  • This is an essential position supporting animal care requiring possible scheduled attendance on holidays and during emergency conditions, such as inclement weather.
  • Must love animals AND people!

Must be willing to give permission for a background check and a DMV report. Must possess a valid unrestricted driver's license with a driving record acceptable by Blue Ridge Humane Society's insurance carrier. May be asked to submit to drug testing during employment.
