About This Position
Purpose:
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides personal care and assists patients with activities of daily living under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse. This role supports adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, helping to ensure safe, compassionate, and efficient care delivery.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
- Personal Care & Daily Living Support
- Provide or assist with bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, and other personal care needs.
- Assist patients with toileting procedures, including the use of bedpans and urinals.
- Assist with meals and feed patients as needed.
- Make occupied and unoccupied beds.
- Patient Observation & Assistance
- Measure intake and output as directed and report findings to the nurse.
- Report any observed changes in patient status promptly to the nurse.
- Answer call lights promptly and direct requests to appropriate staff.
- Assist with personal care of complex patients under nurse supervision (not independently).
- May assist with patients in isolation after completion of required infection control training.
- Mobility & Transfer Support
- Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, and positioning in accordance with activity orders.
- Assist with mechanical lift and stretcher transfers.
- Clinical & Supportive Functions
- Obtain and record vital signs after competency validation.
- In the Emergency Department, may perform EKGs, glucometers, and collect specimens after competency validation.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment by caring for equipment, utensils, and laundry.
- Professionalism & Safety
- Adhere to infection control principles, universal precautions, and safety protocols.
- Demonstrate ethical, professional, and respectful behavior in all interactions.
- Participate in required education, training modules, and competency assessments.
- Support hospital promotion and community health initiatives as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of training and policy.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program, one month of on-site training by qualified staff, or completion of one semester in an approved LPN or RN program including clinical practice.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Experience:
- One month of direct care experience preferred.
Contacts:
- Frequent contact with patients, families, staff, physicians, and visitors.
Physical Demands:
- Stands and walks most of the day.
- Requires moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment.
Working Conditions:
- Hospital environment with frequent exposure to cuts, burns, infections, communicable diseases, strains, and injuries from patients or equipment.
