JOB RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible to Office Coordinators and Clinic Administrators across Carteret Health Care outpatient clinics for daily operational workflows, clinic duties, and patient care delivery. Also maintains a reporting relationship with the Student Programs Coordinator for apprenticeship coordination, academic progress tracking, and program compliance, working in close collaboration with Carteret Community College (CCC).

DEFINITION OF POSITION
-
The Medical Assistant Apprentice position is a dynamic, multi-stage healthcare career pathway operated in formal partnership with Carteret Community College (CCC). Designed to combine paid, hands-on clinical experience with academic instruction, this apprenticeship guides students through a structured progression as they build skills and advance in responsibility across three distinct roles:
1. Patient Services Representative: provides essential front-office support in areas such as patient check-in, phone communication, scheduling, and medical records. Individuals in this role may be assigned to one or more of these functions based on office needs. They help maintain accurate patient information and ensure a professional, efficient experience for all patients.2. Patient Support Specialist: plays a key role in ensuring seamless coordination of care within the medical practice. This position supports patients, providers, and internal teams by managing any of the following referral coordination, prior authorization processes, and OR scheduling. The specialist ensures that all steps are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with insurance and regulatory requirements, contributing to an excellent patient experience and optimized clinical workflow.
3. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA): Reaches full scope of practice upon program completion and credentialing, performing advanced clinical support, point-of-care testing, and specialized patient care under provider supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

Mandatory Educational Enrollment: Must be actively accepted into or currently enrolled in the Medical Assisting Program at Carteret Community College (CCC) and remain in good academic standing throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.

Basic Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

Essential Skills: Basic knowledge of medical terminology, Some knowledge of third-party billing processes, Ability to maintain strictly confidential medical information and adhere to HIPAA guidelines, Strong communication skills and basic computer literacy, Commitment to patient-centered care and the organizational ability to balance clinic shifts with CCC academic coursework.
