Summary
The Head of Accounting and Finance is the CFO’s strategic partner and the operating leader of COMC’s accounting and finance function. This role owns the three-statement financial model, annual budgeting, and rolling forecasting; leads the close process and financial reporting; and will lead COMC through its first external audit/assurance engagement.
This role also leads and grows a small but expanding finance team, including a Senior Accountant, a BI/Data Analyst, and an Ops Planning & Forecasting Manager, and partners directly with the CFO on capital structure, board reporting, and strategic initiatives.
About You
You do both FP&A and accounting, and you’re equally comfortable building a financial model, defending a financial statement, and thinking two steps ahead on strategy. You’ve built and owned a three-statement model, not just reviewed one someone else built, and you have the GAAP judgment to know when to handle something yourself versus bring in specialist support. You’re strategic enough to partner with the CFO on capital allocation and board reporting, and hands-on enough to dig into the close process or a spreadsheet yourself. You treat ambiguity and building processes where none exist as the job, not the exception.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Own COMC’s three-statement financial model, annual budgeting, rolling quarterly forecasting, and the financial package delivered to the executive team and Board.
- Oversee the close process, ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, and analyze variance data to flag operational improvements.
- Support the BI/Data Analyst in translating complex financial data into a clear, actionable narrative for non-financial stakeholders across the company.
- Support the Senior Accountant in owning day-to-day accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable, and billing.
- Lead, mentor, and grow the finance team, including the Senior Accountant, BI/Data Analyst, and Ops Planning & Forecasting Manager.
- Lead COMC through its first external audit/assurance engagement, designing the financial systems, processes, and internal controls a first-time audit and a scaling company require.
- Ensure GAAP compliance across the function, bringing in specialist CPA support for technical questions as needed.
- Own corporate tax filings and the relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial stakeholders.
- Manage cash flow and capital allocation, and partner directly with the CFO on capital structure, board reporting, and strategic initiatives.
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong GAAP knowledge and the judgment to know when to bring in specialist support versus handle something directly.
- Proven ability to operate as both a strategic partner and a hands-on practitioner — equally comfortable building a model, defending a financial statement, and thinking ahead on strategy.
- A growth mindset: builds processes where none may exist, treats ambiguity as the job rather than the exception, and is energized by a fast-changing environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into a clear story for the executive team and Board.
- Hands-on experience with accounting systems, plus advanced Excel modeling and data analytics skills.
Education & Experience
- 12+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role managing a finance or accounting team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Demonstrated experience building and owning a three-statement financial model from the ground up, not just reviewing one someone else built.
- Experience managing cross-border operations, particularly between the U.S. and Canada, is a plus.
Benefits Offerings
- 9 Paid Company Holidays per year
- Paid Time Off up to nearly 4 weeks per year
- 401(k) Program with Company Match
- Employer provided Free Medical + Dental plans
- Employer provided LTD and Life Insurance
- STD for employees outside of Washington State
- Employee discount on www.COMC.com
- Employee Assistance Program
