Position Purpose:

The High-Risk OB & Fetal Echo Preceptor is responsible for providing temporary clinical education, hands-on training, and competency development for sonographers within Women’s Imaging. This role supports staff development, standardization of high-risk obstetrical and fetal echocardiography ultrasound practices, and continuous quality improvement to ensure high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and consistency in imaging protocols and documentation.

The Preceptor serves as a clinical expert and educator, providing direct instruction, mentorship, and competency validation for staff performing advanced obstetrical and fetal echocardiography examinations. This includes training staff on imaging techniques, anatomy recognition, workflow efficiency, structured reporting, and documentation within AS software and EPIC.

This role also supports departmental efforts to maintain compliance with AIUM accreditation standards and best practices related to obstetrical and fetal echocardiography imaging. The Preceptor assists with ensuring imaging quality, protocol standardization, staff competency, documentation requirements, and adherence to established guidelines necessary to support ongoing accreditation and quality initiatives.

Key Job Activities:

· Provides hands-on clinical instruction and education to sonographers performing high-risk obstetrical and fetal echocardiography examinations.

· Trains and validates staff competency in performing all trimester obstetrical ultrasound examinations, including first, second, and third trimester imaging.

· Provides education and training on fetal anatomy scans, detailed anatomy (Level II) ultrasounds, fetal growth assessments, and advanced high-risk OB imaging protocols.

· Demonstrates and trains staff on advanced Doppler studies, including Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA) and Ductus Venosus evaluations.

· Provides training and competency support for Nuchal Translucency (NT) examinations, including proper imaging acquisition, measurements, and adherence to established guidelines and quality standards.

· Assists with education and procedural workflow support related to ultrasound-guided amniocentesis procedures, including patient preparation, sterile technique support, imaging guidance, and documentation requirements.

· Provides instruction and oversight related to fetal echocardiography imaging techniques, anatomy identification, image optimization, and protocol adherence.

· Ensures sonographers perform exams according to departmental standards, physician expectations, AIUM guidelines, and best practices.

· Assists with standardization of scanning protocols, workflows, and imaging techniques to improve quality and consistency across the department.

· Educates staff on accurate and complete documentation within AS software structured reporting systems and EPIC electronic medical record workflows.

· Reviews ultrasound images and documentation for quality, completeness, and diagnostic accuracy, providing real-time feedback and coaching opportunities.

· Assists leadership with identifying educational gaps, workflow challenges, and opportunities for process improvement related to high-risk OB and fetal echo services.

· Supports onboarding and competency training for newly hired sonographers as needed.

· Maintains effective communication and collaboration with physicians, leadership, sonographers, and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care and departmental operations.

· Promotes a positive and respectful learning environment that encourages professional growth, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement.

· Supports departmental readiness and compliance efforts related to AIUM accreditation standards, including protocol adherence, quality assurance, image review, and staff competency validation.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Work Experience:

· Associates Degree in Applied Science in Ultrasound

· Bachelor’s Degree preferred

· 5 or more years’ experience as a high risk OB/Gyn sonographer working in an ultrasound setting preferred

· Minimum of 3–5 years of advanced high-risk OB and fetal echocardiography experience preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

· Strong knowledge of high-risk obstetrical ultrasound protocols, fetal anatomy, Doppler imaging, and fetal echocardiography

· Experience with AS structured reporting software and EPIC preferred

· Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills required

· Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

· Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through ARDMS required

· OB/GYN and Fetal Echo specialty credential required
