Job Description

Staff Site Reliability Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Site Reliability Engineer based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the reliability strategy behind a large-scale developer platform used by millions of users worldwide. As a senior individual contributor, you will influence engineering practices from architecture through production, ensuring systems are scalable, observable, and resilient by design. You will work closely with product, platform, and engineering teams to establish reliability standards, improve operational excellence, and reduce production risk across multiple services. Beyond responding to incidents, your primary mission will be preventing them through proactive engineering, automation, and strategic technical leadership. The position combines deep infrastructure expertise with software engineering and cross-functional collaboration in a fast-moving, remote-first environment. If you enjoy solving complex distributed systems challenges while driving organization-wide technical improvements, this role offers significant impact and autonomy.

Accountabilities:
  • Partner with engineering teams from the earliest stages of product development to ensure reliability, scalability, and operational readiness are built into every project.
  • Define and evolve production readiness standards, including architecture reviews, launch criteria, operational checklists, and engineering best practices.
  • Establish and maintain Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and error budgets to support data-driven operational decision-making.
  • Design and improve infrastructure frameworks, automation, and reusable deployment patterns across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud using Terraform.
  • Lead reliability initiatives across multiple engineering teams by influencing technical direction, resolving operational challenges, and mentoring engineers.
  • Drive continuous improvement of incident management processes, postmortems, monitoring strategies, and operational resilience.
  • Participate in the team's on-call rotation while helping reduce operational burden through automation, proactive improvements, and system optimization.
  • Collaborate with cloud providers, internal stakeholders, and technical partners to improve infrastructure capabilities and support long-term platform growth.
Requirements:
  • Significant experience as a Site Reliability Engineer, Production Engineer, Platform Engineer, or Software Engineer with a strong focus on reliability and large-scale systems.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure across AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Solid software engineering skills with experience contributing to production-quality applications, including TypeScript and Ruby on Rails environments.
  • Deep understanding of observability, monitoring, incident response, distributed systems, and production operations.
  • Experience defining and implementing SLI, SLO, and error budget frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives across multiple teams without direct management responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills with the ability to identify operational risks and drive long-term improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, customers, and external partners.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and promoting operational excellence across engineering organizations.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work environment with flexibility to work from anywhere.
  • Opportunity to influence the reliability strategy of a globally scaled developer platform.
  • High-impact technical leadership role with significant autonomy and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Exposure to modern cloud-native technologies, multi-cloud infrastructure, and advanced DevOps practices.
  • Collaborative engineering culture focused on innovation, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Participation in challenging large-scale infrastructure and platform engineering initiatives.
  • Inclusive hiring process where equivalent experience is valued alongside traditional qualifications.
