This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior External Development Lighting Artist based in Canada.

This role is an opportunity to shape the visual identity of AAA action games by crafting high-quality lighting that defines mood, atmosphere, and narrative depth across immersive environments. You will work at the intersection of artistic vision and technical execution, supporting both internal teams and external partners to ensure a consistent, high-end visual standard. The position involves close collaboration with level designers, VFX artists, cinematic teams, and engineers to deliver visually compelling and technically optimized lighting solutions. You will also help define external lighting pipelines, establish quality benchmarks, and ensure delivered assets align with artistic direction and engine performance constraints. This is a highly creative and technically advanced role within a global game development environment. It is ideal for an artist passionate about storytelling through light and pushing real-time rendering quality forward.

Accountabilities:
  • Create and implement high-end lighting setups that define mood, atmosphere, narrative tone, and visual coherence across gameplay and cinematic environments.
  • Support level design teams by providing lighting solutions that enhance gameplay readability and meet design intentions.
  • Develop lighting assets including light objects, IES profiles, HDR textures, and supporting technical materials for real-time environments.
  • Collaborate with VFX and cinematic teams to deliver visually impactful and emotionally driven cutscene lighting.
  • Establish and maintain external development workflows, including documentation, technical benchmarks, and lighting quality standards.
  • Review and audit internal and external deliverables to ensure visual consistency, artistic quality, and engine performance compliance.
  • Identify and resolve lighting-related performance issues, optimizing scenes for modern hardware constraints.
  • Work closely with engineering and technical art teams to develop new lighting techniques and improve Unreal Engine workflows.
  • Manage feedback loops using production tracking tools (e.g., Jira) and ensure external partners meet defined expectations.
Requirements:
  • At least 2–5+ years of experience in the video game industry in a lighting or environment art role.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Unreal Engine and real-time lighting workflows.
  • Solid understanding of global illumination techniques, including baked lighting, dynamic lighting, and lightmap generation.
  • Ability to create and manage lighting-related assets such as IES profiles, HDR textures, materials, and scripts.
  • Strong artistic eye with the ability to evaluate environmental depth, mood, and visual storytelling through lighting.
  • Good understanding of performance constraints, memory budgets, and optimization techniques for current-generation consoles.
  • Experience collaborating with distributed teams across disciplines, time zones, and external partner workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with a strong collaborative mindset.
  • Passion for video games and awareness of current industry trends and Unreal Engine advancements.
Benefits:
  • Fully employer-paid benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Dental coverage including major procedures and orthodontics
  • RRSP matching program up to 4%, fully vested from day one
  • Paid winter holiday break
  • 20 vacation days and 5 paid sick days annually
  • Annual performance-based bonus opportunity
  • Virtual health and mental wellness support services for employees and dependents
  • Remote-friendly international work environment
  • Strong focus on career development and creative growth opportunities
  • Opportunity to work on AAA titles within a globally distributed, highly creative team
