Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW (non-exempt):

Performs a wide variety of patient care activities and nursing care services for patients as directed. Carries out care to patients according to nursing care policies and his/her ability as required. Accountable for the quality of care provided, according to his/her training. Performs procedures as instructed. Works in cooperation with other professional staff in their combined effort to provide good nursing care for their patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current Iowa LPN license
  • Current BLS, ACLS as indicated by area of responsibility

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Reports to Registered Nurse, Charge Nurse, or House Supervisor

DIRECT REPORTS:

None

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Consistently utilizes methods and knowledge to accurately assess all patient systems. The initial assessment must be performed by the RN.
  • Assists the RN in identifying appropriate nursing diagnosis to develop a plan of care that is individualized, timely, and patient centered.
  • Implements nursing actions safely and consistently with the plan of care.
  • Assists the RN in incorporating patient and family teaching into the assessment and care of each patient. Assists the RN in evaluating outcomes of patient care and teaching.
  • Completes accurate documentation including assessment, planning, intervention teaching, and evaluation of patient care.
  • Acts as liaison between physicians, care team, the patient, and the family. Serves as patient advocate, as necessary.
  • Attends all required meetings and in-services.
  • Contacts include but are not limited to co-workers, medical staff, volunteers, patients, and public (in person and on the telephone).
  • Other duties as necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
