Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. This individual will be responsible for taking concepts from initial design through production-ready documentation. The successful candidate will develop innovative mechanical systems, create detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings, and work closely with manufacturing and project teams to deliver high-quality products.
This position requires a hands-on engineer capable of independently developing robust mechanical designs while considering manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, reliability, and cost.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical designs from concept through production release.
- Create complete 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials.
- Design servo-driven mechanical systems incorporating rotating and multi-axis motion.
- Design structural weldments, machined components, sheet metal parts, and mechanical assemblies.
- Select appropriate bearings, shafts, fasteners, gears, couplings, actuators, and other mechanical components.
- Design mechanisms requiring precise rotational and tilt motion.
- Develop mounting systems and structural reinforcements for installation on yacht-style vessels.
- Coordinate designs with manufacturing personnel to ensure efficient fabrication and assembly.
- Produce detailed manufacturing drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, and assembly instructions.
- Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into final designs.
- Troubleshoot design issues during fabrication and assembly.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and product improvements.
- Travel periodically to customer locations and installation sites as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline, or equivalent combination of education and significant design experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing complete mechanical systems from concept through production.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and machine design.
- Experience developing production-quality manufacturing drawings.
- Knowledge of fabrication processes including machining, welding, and assembly.
- Ability to independently solve complex mechanical design problems.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with SolidWorks including parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
- Experience with other major 3D CAD platforms such as Creo, Inventor, NX, CATIA, or Solid Edge.
- Experience designing servo-driven motion systems.
- Familiarity with bearings, gearing, drive systems, actuators, and motion control hardware.
- Experience designing welded structures and structural reinforcements.
- Experience with marine or yacht installations.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Experience supporting prototype development and product testing.
Desired Characteristics
The ideal candidate is an innovative, self-motivated engineer who enjoys solving challenging mechanical problems. This individual should be comfortable working from broad concepts with minimal direction and capable of producing complete, production-ready designs. The successful candidate will possess strong attention to detail while maintaining focus on functionality, manufacturability, reliability, and overall product performance.
