Job Role & Title: CFOC-DOC Shelter Care Support, Kingston ON
Compensation Range: $23.50 per hour (days) & $25 (Overnight)
Hours: PT Sun - Sat 8 - 24 hours per week
Reports Directly To: CFOC-DOC Shelter Operations Manager, CFOC-DOC Shelter Care Team Supervisor
Upper Management: CEO, CFOC-DOC - Executive Director, CFOC-DOC Senior Manager – Shelter Operations and Residential Supports
Purpose of the position: To provide care and support to unsheltered individuals seeking shelter support. CFOC-DOC – Shelter Care Team Members administer and implement access to CFOC-DOC shelter programs. CFOC-DOC’s shelters are co-ed, low-barrier, housing-focused emergency shelters to assist patrons experiencing homelessness and/or housing insecurity. CFOC-DOC shelter patrons come from racially, culturally, and ethnically diverse backgrounds, as well as varied circumstances that may include serious physical or mental health illnesses, substance use, poverty, social isolation, unemployment and/or underemployment, etc. CFOC-DOC Team Members work from a person-centred, trauma-informed, harm reduction approach to determine immediate and ongoing patron needs, collect and provide information, make appropriate referrals, and resolve conflict situations.

Key skills, experience and behaviours required for this position:
● Completion of post-secondary education in a health-related field, such as Social Work/Social Service, Psychology, Nursing, Mental Health, and Addiction, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
● Minimum of 6 months of experience providing support services for patrons facing complex challenges, including mental illness and addiction.
● Above average aptitude to provide essential, patron-centered support and direct assistance focusing on safety, system navigation and basic needs such as life skills development, nutrition and hygiene.
● Knowledge, understanding and experience with trauma-informed care, harm-reduction intervention approaches and non-violent crisis prevention and intervention strategies.
● Familiar with the City of Kingston’s homelessness prevention initiatives, Coordinated Access System, HIFIS and the By-Name List or other equivalent data collection experience.
● Possess excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to interact effectively with patrons, team members, and community partners.
● Experience with tracking metrics for program evaluation and writing incident reports to summarize corrective actions when necessary.
● Exercises judgement and discretion with confidential patron and organisational information.
● Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative, is results-oriented and able to prioritize tasks and work well independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
● Demonstrate basic computer proficiency for documentation in client databases and managing administrative tasks.
● Current CPR/First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention, Food Handling Certification, Vulnerable Sector Police Check,
● Valid driver’s license, second language, owns a vehicle an asset
Key areas of accountability

Daily shelter operations | ● Available to work Sunday - Saturday rotating shifts (0630-1500 and 1430-2300) or for overnight 2230 - 0700 for 37.5 - 40 hours per week, including at least 1 weekend per month, available for occasional casual shifts or relief to ensure shift coverage. ● Ensure all daily data entry is completed by the end of shift including HIFIS, medical logs, comm logs, task sheets, incident reports, and any other administrative duties as assigned. ● Assist patrons with personal hygiene including; changing linens and supporting with laundry as required, general maintenance of the shelter (may include mopping up messes, cleaning and sanitizing washrooms, unclogging toilets, snow removal in the winter etc.) ● Participate in daily team shift change debriefing sessions to address challenges and ensure team is working in a unified, client focused lens. ● Upholding CFOC-DOC’s Code of Conduct using a client focused, harm reduction and compassionate approach. ● Track inventory and submitting monthly supply requests to Manager/Assistant Supervisor. ● Maintaining files and other confidential information in accordance with PIPEDA guidelines. ● Works within the policies, procedures and regulations as required by CFOC-DOC and under the Ontario Health & Safety Act and IPAC. ● Ensure all safety guidelines are in compliance with health standards and followed at all times by staff and attendees, proper sterilization and hygiene practices, social distancing and masking where required. ● Support with food service as required ● Attend all mandatory team meetings of CFOC-DOC as required. |
Patron centre care | ● Ensure all intakes are provided in a patron-centered and harm reduction approach to determine immediate and ongoing patron needs. ● Support conflict resolution by using non-judgmental, attentive listening skills and non-violent crisis prevention and intervention strategies. ● Overseeing the supervision of patron safety and compliance to the Code of Conduct as established by CFOC-DOC. ● Assisting patrons with service navigation including; housing and employment searches, ID replacement, completing applications for OW/ODSP, and life skills development programming. ● Respond to patron inquiries when other resources are not available and assign as appropriate to community support workers where needed (medical, counselling, housing support, harm reduction etc). |
