Payroll Team Leader

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Payroll Team Leader based in India.

This role offers the opportunity to lead and elevate payroll operations within a dynamic, global, and remote-first environment where flexibility and autonomy are central to how work gets done. You will oversee end-to-end payroll processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across multiple client accounts while managing and guiding a high-performing payroll team. The position combines operational execution with leadership responsibilities, requiring you to drive performance, improve processes, and ensure seamless payroll delivery in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. You will play a key role in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, while also supporting financial reporting, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. This is a highly impactful leadership role where your decisions directly influence service quality, client satisfaction, and team performance. You will also contribute to shaping a culture of accountability, development, and operational excellence within a global payroll organization.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the payroll team, ensuring smooth, accurate, and timely payroll processing across multiple client accounts.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to team members while fostering motivation, accountability, and high performance.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of payroll team members to strengthen overall capability.
  • Oversee payroll execution activities including processing, payments, reporting, forecasts, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to all financial, legal, regulatory, and internal payroll policies and standards.
  • Monitor payroll performance metrics, analyze trends, and contribute to forecasting and strategic payroll planning.
  • Drive continuous improvement of payroll systems, processes, and internal controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Prepare and review reports, dashboards, and presentations to support decision-making and operational transparency.
  • Delegate tasks effectively while maintaining oversight, quality assurance, and performance monitoring.
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams, clients, vendors, and stakeholders to ensure service excellence.
  • Resolve payroll-related issues and support complex query management with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Contribute to special projects and organizational initiatives related to payroll transformation and optimization.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in payroll operations, with proven experience in a team leadership or supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processes, compliance requirements, and local payroll legislation across relevant regions.
  • Experience in managing end-to-end payroll cycles, including reporting, reconciliation, and regulatory filings.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a payroll team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex payroll concepts to non-specialists.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills with a structured and process-driven approach to work.
  • Experience working with payroll systems and financial controls is highly desirable.
  • Self-driven professional with strong ownership, initiative, and leadership mindset.
