About the Role
The Snowcat Operator plays a vital role in delivering an exceptional Nordic skiing experience at Lone Mountain Ranch. Working behind the scenes, this position is responsible for grooming and maintaining our Nordic trail system to the highest standards, ensuring guests enjoy safe, scenic, and beautifully prepared trails throughout the winter season.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in operating specialized equipment, and appreciates the impact their work has on the guest experience. Snowcat Operators work independently and as part of the Activities team to maintain trail quality, monitor conditions, and help create one of the premier Nordic skiing experiences in the country.
What You'll Do- Groom and maintain Nordic ski trails using snowcats, snowmobiles, and other trail maintenance equipment
- Operate grooming implements including tillers, track setters, blades, and other specialized tools
- Monitor trail conditions and make adjustments to ensure safe, consistent, and enjoyable skiing surfaces
- Repair trail hazards, fill ruts, and maintain trail corridors throughout the season
- Perform routine inspections, fueling, cleaning, and basic maintenance on snowcats, snowmobiles, and grooming equipment
- Assist with trail maintenance using chainsaws and other equipment as needed
- Communicate daily trail conditions, grooming reports, and operational updates with the Activities team
- Complete grooming logs, inspections, and other required documentation accurately and on time
- Follow all safety procedures, operating standards, and company policies
- Contribute to a positive team culture while promoting a safe and welcoming environment for guests and fellow employees
- Minimum of 3 years of experience operating snowcats, heavy equipment, or similar machinery
- Strong understanding of snow conditions, trail grooming techniques, and winter operations
- Experience operating snowmobiles in a variety of winter conditions
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform routine inspections and minor equipment maintenance
- Familiarity with Nordic skiing, including classic and skate skiing, preferred
- Experience using chainsaws and performing trail maintenance safely
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Reliable, adaptable, and comfortable making decisions in changing weather and trail conditions
- Ability to work overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and variable schedules based on operational needs
- Work primarily outdoors in winter conditions, including snow, wind, and temperatures as low as -30°F
- Frequent lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, and working on uneven or snowy terrain
- Most grooming operations take place overnight or during low-light conditions
- Requires the ability to work independently with limited supervision while maintaining focus on safety and quality
