Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
Operates, maintains, and repairs diesel powered generators, pumps, and equipment. Keeps records of equipment, diesel fuel supply status, licenses, inspections, and certification of equipment. Keeps spare parts inventory for critical equipment for normal operation and storm preparation.

In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants). Additionally, this job classification is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Operates and tests diesel powered generators, pumps, and equipment
  • Diagnoses malfunctions; disassembles engines; examines parts for defects and wear
  • Reconditions and/or replaces parts such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves and bushings, using hand or power tools and precision-measuring and testing instruments,
  • Performs complete overhaul of diesel engines when required
  • Maintains records of equipment status and certifications
  • Ensures emergency preparedness of equipment
  • Procures parts and services as needed
  • Assists in preparing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
  • Works around high voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and County Underground Storage Tank (UST) regulations.
  • Performs related work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, preferably supplemented with technical training by a diesel manufacturer or vocational/trade school.
  2. Three or more years of experience operating and maintaining diesel powered generators.
  3. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher with Air Brakes and an acceptable driving record.

As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
