This role serves as a central operational pillar within a mission-driven People & Culture function, ensuring smooth execution of HR processes across the full employee lifecycle. It combines hands-on HR operations with employee relations support, benefits administration, and systems management in a fully remote, unionized environment. The People Operations Lead acts as a trusted first point of contact for staff HR inquiries while ensuring compliance, consistency, and accuracy across all HR workflows. This position plays a key role in maintaining efficient hiring, onboarding, and offboarding processes while continuously improving internal systems and employee experience. It requires a high level of discretion, emotional intelligence, and independent judgment when handling sensitive employee matters. - Manage day-to-day HR operations across employee relations, benefits administration, HRIS management, hiring coordination, and onboarding/offboarding processes.
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee inquiries, providing timely, accurate, and compassionate support on HR-related matters.
- Support employee relations processes, including intake and documentation of concerns, assistance with conflict resolution, and coordination of performance management actions in collaboration with HR leadership.
- Administer benefits programs, including enrollments, life event changes, leave management (FMLA, disability, parental leave), and coordination with external vendors.
- Oversee HRIS data integrity, payroll-related adjustments, and compliance with multi-state employment and tax requirements.
- Manage recruitment operations including job postings, applicant tracking, background checks, reference verification, onboarding coordination, and offboarding processes.
- Maintain HR policies, employee handbook updates, and internal communications while supporting training and HR process alignment across teams.
- Contribute to HR reporting, KPI tracking, employee feedback analysis, and continuous improvement of People Operations systems and workflows.
- 3–5 years of experience in HR generalist, HR operations, or people operations roles with exposure to multiple HR functions.
- Strong knowledge of employee relations processes and ability to handle sensitive workplace issues with discretion and professionalism.
- Familiarity with U.S. employment laws and regulations, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, COBRA, and multi-state payroll compliance.
- Experience managing HR systems (HRIS), payroll-related processes, and data accuracy in a distributed or complex organizational environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft clear policies, guidance documents, and employee-facing communications.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to improve workflows and manage competing priorities independently.
- High emotional intelligence, empathy, and ability to build trust across diverse teams in a remote-first environment.
- Preferred: prior experience working in unionized environments and fully remote organizations.
- Salary range of $75,000 – $89,999 depending on experience
