Basic Functions and Scope of Responsibility
The Director of Wellness at the Decatur Shelby County YMCA is a dynamic, mission-driven leader responsible for shaping a culture of health and well-being across our Y community. This role oversees wellness operations including fitness programming, personal and group training, and wellness initiatives that serve members of all ages and abilities. The ideal candidate will bring both strategic vision and hands-on leadership, working closely with staff and community partners to deliver high-quality, inclusive programs that reflect our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Role Responsibilities
- Ensure consistent and engaging delivery of wellness, fitness, and group exercise programs.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate a high-performing team of wellness staff and instructors.
- Develop and evaluate programs to increase member engagement and retention.
- Lead initiatives such as corporate wellness, community outreach, and chronic disease prevention.
- Prepare and manage budgets, track KPIs, and ensure resource efficiency.
- Collaborate with marketing to promote wellness offerings and tell success stories.
- Ensure the wellness center remains clean, safe, and inclusive for all users.
- Support association-wide initiatives and assume other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience & Training
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, physical education, recreation, or a similarly related field.
- Minimum of 2 years in wellness program leadership, including direct staff supervision preferred.
- YMCA Team Leader certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 2 years.
- Certification in Personal Training and/or Group Exercise from one of the following: ACSM, AFAA, NASM, ACE, or NCSF.
- CPR, AED and First Aid certification obtained within 30 days of employment
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and computer skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
- Must have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
