  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Laboratory Specimen Processor is responsible for accurate receipt, sorting, accessioning, and preparation of clinical specimens for both in-house and send-out testing. This position reviews test orders for completeness and accuracy and ensures proper patient and specimen identification at all times. The Specimen Processor supports timely testing by ensuring specimens are correctly labeled, processed, stored, and delivered to the appropriate laboratory departments in accordance with established procedures. This role utilizes hospital and laboratory information systems to audit selected manual and electronic orders, document specimen information, and maintain accurate records. The Specimen Processor plays a critical role in maintaining specimen integrity, meeting storage and transport requirements, and supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality laboratory operations.

  • JOB QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education:
        • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 18 years of age.
        • One year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
    • Certifications/Licenses:
        • Wyoming Driver’s License and a good driving record (less than 2 moving violations within previous 2 years with no alcohol/drug related violation on record with the Driver’s License Division) is required.

    • Job Knowledge and Skills:
        • Knowledge of clinical laboratory specimen processing, accessioning workflow and pre-analytical procedures.
        • Knowledge of proper patient identification and specimen labeling standards to ensure specimen integrity and patient safety.
        • Understanding of specimen handling, storage, packaging, and shipping requirements, including send-out testing and referent laboratory protocols.
        • Understanding of quality assurance principles and the importance of accuracy, timeliness, and documentation in laboratory operations.
        • Strong data entry skills with the ability to accurately input and very patient and test information in the LIS/HIS systems.
        • Ability to identify discrepancies, specimen issues or inaccuracies and promptly communicate concerns to laboratory leadership.
        • Effective organization and time-management skills to prioritize STAT and routine testing in a fast-paced environment.
        • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide professional and courteous customer service via telephone and in person.
        • Team-oriented with the ability to work collaboratively with other team members and external contacts.
        • Ability to follow detailed policies, procedures, and protocols with minimal supervision.
        • Adaptability and willingness to participate in training, competency assessments, and ongoing education and process improvement.
