Job Description
SUMMARY: The Laboratory Assistant, under the direction of the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager or Coordinator, assists with performing clinical laboratory testing in various sections of the lab and supports the lab with clerical duties. Interacts with other staff members and communicates with clients as outlined.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Prioritize specimen accessioning activities, including receipt, verification, labeling, and data entry of urine, blood, and other clinical specimens.
- Follows lab procedures for specimen handling and processing, reporting, and maintaining records.
- Adheres to all lab quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
- Understands and adheres to HIPPA regulations and requirements at all times.
- Follows established safety standards and procedures and complies with legal regulations.
- Reports to work on time for all scheduled shifts and completes entire shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support laboratory volume, projects and priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Science degree (or currently in progress) preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to follow written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Ability to work effectively with staff and clients.
- Ability to establish priorities and coordinate workflow activities as needed to support clinical operations.
- Ability to work independently, organize tasks, and meet established deadlines.
- Strong organizational and time management skills in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Basic computer proficiency; experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and laboratory compliance standards.

This position operates in a clinical laboratory/medical practice environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases and biological specimens, including body fluids. While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to communicate verbally and audibly. Frequent use of hands and fingers for handling specimens, tools, and equipment is required. The employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or occasionally climb.
The role may require lifting and/or moving up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
HOURS/TRAVEL:
- May travel between locations occasionally as requested.
- Typical work hours: First shift, Includes Weekdays and Saturdays
- Depending on client-specific work schedule, may include other daily hours, weekends and/or holidays.
- May need to work occasional overtime as required.
