Job Description
Position Summary:
The Port Foreman A is responsible for leading and overseeing daily port and terminal operations, including cargo handling, material movement, and equipment utilization. This role provides full supervision of operators, riggers, and labor crews, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. The Port Foreman A serves as a key operational leader, driving productivity, coordinating resources, and ensuring smooth communication across all terminal activities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee daily port operations, including equipment operators, riggers, and labor crews.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute cargo handling activities to meet production goals and operational timelines.
- Ensure the safe setup, inspection, and operation of port equipment, including forklifts, cranes, and material handling systems.
- Monitor workflow and adjust operations proactively to maintain efficiency and meet performance targets.
- Identify and resolve equipment issues, safety concerns, or operational delays in coordination with management.
- Supervise, train, and mentor crew members to ensure adherence to operational procedures and safety standards.
- Enforce all company policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and safety inspections.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for vessel personnel, operations management, and terminal staff.
- Coordinate vessel operations, cargo staging, and yard activities to ensure efficient turnaround.
- Develop and manage crew schedules based on vessel schedules, cargo type, and operational demand.
- Review and approve timekeeping and payroll submissions for assigned personnel.
- Coordinate with Operations Management and Human Resources on staffing, attendance, and workforce planning.
- Maintain accurate documentation for timekeeping, attendance, and operational reporting.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, productivity, and operational efficiency.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and effective terminal operations.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
- Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in port operations, marine terminals, logistics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or foreman-level experience managing dock crews or material handling operations.
- Strong knowledge of port equipment, cargo handling procedures, and applicable safety regulations.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret operational plans, cargo manifests, and equipment documentation.
- Experience managing personnel, schedules, and production activities in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays based on operational demands.
Preferred Experience:
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or ability to obtain.
- Certifications in rigging, signaling, or crane operation.
- Experience with bulk, breakbulk, or containerized cargo operations.
- Experience with workforce scheduling, payroll systems, or operational reporting tools.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to climb ladders, access docks, and work at heights as required.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and around heavy equipment.
- Required use of PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toe boots) in operational areas.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor port and terminal environment with exposure to weather, heavy machinery, noise, and dust.
- Fast-paced, safety-sensitive setting requiring coordination with vessel crews, yard personnel, and equipment operators.
- Standard work hours may include extended hours, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs.
