SAWYER COUNTY
Medical Examiner (Part-Time)

Position Summary

Sawyer County is accepting applications for a part-time Medical Examiner. The Medical Examiner is responsible for investigating deaths within the Medical Examiner's Office's jurisdiction in accordance with Wisconsin law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Investigate reportable deaths as required by Wisconsin law.
• Respond to death scenes, healthcare facilities, and other locations as necessary.
• Conduct examinations and document findings.
• Obtain medical histories and witness statements.
• Coordinate transportation of decedents.
• Order and review autopsies and toxicology testing.
• Complete death certificates and required reports.
• Maintain accurate records and case files.
• Testify in court when required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must meet qualifications established under Wisconsin law.
• Wisconsin Medical Examiner/Coroner certification preferred or ability to obtain certification.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Valid Wisconsin driver's license.

Working Conditions

Medical Examiner or Deputy Medical Examiner needs on-call availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Exposure to traumatic scenes and deceased individuals. Travel throughout Sawyer County required.

Compensation

Salary of $15,000.00 per year, $100.00 for each death certificate and $50.00 for each cremation certificate

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Medical Examiner is responsible for investigating deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 979. The position determines the cause and manner of death through scene investigations, medical record review, witness interviews, consultation with medical professionals, and forensic examination. The Medical Examiner works closely with law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, funeral homes, attorneys, and family members while maintaining professional standards and compliance with all applicable laws.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Investigate deaths reportable under Wisconsin law.
• Respond to death scenes, hospitals, nursing homes, residences, and other locations.
• Examine decedents and document findings.
• Obtain and review medical histories, law enforcement reports, witness statements, and other records.
• Determine whether autopsies, toxicology testing, or other forensic examinations are necessary.
• Authorize removal and transportation of decedents.
• Complete and certify death certificates in accordance with state law.
• Establish the cause and manner of death when appropriate.
• Maintain complete and accurate investigative files and records.
• Prepare reports and correspondence related to death investigations.
• Communicate with family members in a professional and compassionate manner.
• Coordinate activities with law enforcement, healthcare facilities, funeral homes, forensic pathologists, and state agencies.
• Testify in court proceedings, depositions, and administrative hearings when required.
• Maintain confidentiality of protected and sensitive information.
• Ensure compliance with Wisconsin Statutes, County policies, and professional standards.
• Participate in required training and continuing education.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must meet the qualifications for Medical Examiner under Wisconsin law.
• Wisconsin Medical Examiner/Coroner Basic Training Certification preferred or ability to obtain certification within required timeframes.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, and death investigation practices preferred.
• Ability to analyze facts, gather evidence, and make sound decisions.
• Ability to prepare detailed written reports.
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with computers and electronic recordkeeping systems.
• Valid Wisconsin driver's license and acceptable driving record.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of Wisconsin death investigation laws and procedures.
• Ability to interact effectively with grieving family members.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to evaluate medical and investigative information.
• Ability to testify and present findings clearly.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with agencies and the public.
• Ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying equipment, and occasional assistance with moving decedents. Visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity sufficient to conduct investigations and prepare reports are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires 24-hour on-call availability (either the Medical Examiner or Deputy Medical Examiner), including nights, weekends, and holidays. Exposure to deceased individuals, bodily fluids, traumatic injuries, infectious diseases, adverse weather, and emotionally difficult situations may occur. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience in healthcare, emergency medical services, law enforcement, forensic sciences, nursing, pathology, or a related field is preferred.
