This is a highly creative opportunity within the children’s and young adult publishing space, focused on designing compelling book covers, jackets, and visual components across multiple imprints.
The role involves bringing stories to life visually for Middle Grade, Young Adult, and adult audiences through striking, market-relevant design.
You will work across concept development through to final production, shaping the visual identity of widely recognized titles and authors.
The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and highly iterative, requiring strong creative agility and attention to detail.
You will engage closely with editorial, production, and internal creative teams to deliver cohesive, high-impact design solutions.
This position also requires staying current with cultural, visual, and publishing design trends to keep output fresh and competitive.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the full cover and jacket design process from initial concept through final production-ready artwork, ensuring strong visual storytelling and market alignment.
  • Develop original design concepts and in-house artwork, including jackets, covers, endpapers, decorative elements, and other components.
  • Commission, direct, and collaborate with illustrators, photographers, and creative talent, fostering strong external creative partnerships.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with editorial, production, and internal design teams to ensure cohesive execution across projects.
  • Prepare press-ready files, manage color correction, and review printed proofs to ensure production accuracy and quality standards.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced publishing environment.
  • Continuously research and apply emerging trends in design, illustration, typography, and popular culture to maintain visual relevance.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in book or publishing design, ideally across multiple genres and age categories.
  • Strong conceptual portfolio demonstrating versatility in cover design, typography, composition, and storytelling.
  • Proven experience commissioning, collaborating with, and art-directing illustrators and creative contributors.
  • Advanced skills in digital photo-illustration, image compositing, typography, and layout design.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Solid understanding of pre-press processes, color management, and print production workflows.
  • Strong organizational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple deadlines and priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Illustration or hand-lettering skills considered an asset.

Benefits:

  • Annual salary range: $73,500 to $74,500.
  • Eligibility for annual profit award or performance bonus, subject to company results.
  • Comprehensive medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) options.
  • Pre-tax and Roth 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance coverage.
  • Life and AD&D insurance.
  • Commuter benefits support.
  • Student loan repayment assistance program.
  • Educational assistance and professional development support.
  • Generous paid time off and flexible work arrangements (including remote eligibility where applicable).
