Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer (Backend) based in Canada.
This role offers the opportunity to provide technical leadership for a business intelligence and client reporting platform serving enterprise healthcare organizations.
You will shape the backend architecture across multiple interconnected services, data sources, and processing workflows.
The position combines hands-on software engineering with responsibility for technical direction, architecture, and engineering standards.
You will help the team navigate complex technical challenges while ensuring systems remain scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable.
Working closely with Product, QA, and engineering teams, you will influence priorities, dependencies, and architectural decisions.
You will also mentor engineers and contribute directly to high-risk or ambiguous technical initiatives.
This is an impactful opportunity for a senior backend engineer who enjoys solving complex problems while guiding engineering strategy.
- Own the technical roadmap for backend services covering reporting, data access, scheduled processing, and export and delivery capabilities.
- Drive architectural decisions across multiple interdependent services and data sources, documenting key decisions and technical direction for the engineering team.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards covering code quality, testing, API design, observability, and overall system reliability.
- Review technical designs and code, provide constructive feedback, and help engineers resolve complex technical challenges.
- Translate ambiguous business and product requirements into clear, actionable technical plans that engineering teams can execute.
- Balance short-term delivery priorities with long-term system health, proactively identifying, prioritizing, and managing technical debt.
- Partner with Product, QA, and other engineering teams to align scope, sequencing, technical dependencies, and delivery plans.
- Lead and contribute to cross-team architecture discussions, solution proposals, and vendor or platform evaluations.
- Mentor engineers and strengthen their technical decision-making, system-design capabilities, and overall engineering judgment.
- Remain hands-on by contributing production code, particularly for complex, high-risk, or high-ambiguity technical problems.
- Help improve CI/CD processes, engineering workflows, and delivery velocity across the backend environment.
- Contribute to the scalability, security, reliability, and observability of distributed backend applications and platforms.
- 12+ years of experience building and operating production backend systems, with demonstrated technical leadership through formal management or senior technical ownership.
- Strong hands-on experience with a modern backend language and framework such as Java/Spring, Kotlin, C#/.NET, Node.js, Python, or Go.
- Proven ability to make and own architectural decisions across multiple interconnected services rather than focusing exclusively on a single application.
- Strong relational database expertise, including schema design, migrations, query performance, and database considerations at the systems-design level.
- Experience designing REST APIs and service contracts consumed by other engineering teams or applications.
- Experience with cloud platforms, with GCP experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, access control, and security tradeoffs within distributed systems.
- Experience coordinating technical work and dependencies across multiple engineers, services, and teams.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerization, including improving pipeline reliability and engineering delivery velocity.
- Strong background designing and building scalable, distributed applications and platforms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain architectural tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience integrating with BI, analytics, or data warehouse platforms is strongly preferred.
- Experience working in regulated or audit-sensitive environments such as healthcare, finance, or insurance is advantageous, particularly where data lineage and accuracy are critical.
- Experience leading migrations or major architectural transformations, as well as asynchronous or scheduled processing for large data volumes, is preferred.
- Experience designing role-based access control and data visibility mechanisms at the system-design level is a plus.
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical planning activities such as estimation, grooming, design reviews, and technical discussions is beneficial.
- Familiarity with distributed caching or session/token stores, frontend concepts, and team-level observability and logging practices is a plus.
- Contract opportunity with a remote working model.
- Opportunity to take ownership of backend architecture for an enterprise business intelligence and reporting platform.
- Significant technical influence across multiple services, systems, and engineering teams.
- Hands-on exposure to scalable distributed systems, cloud technologies, CI/CD, data platforms, and modern backend engineering practices.
- Opportunity to mentor engineers and influence technical standards and architecture.
- Experience working on technology supporting enterprise healthcare clients and data-sensitive environments.
- Opportunity to contribute to major architectural initiatives, migrations, and long-term platform improvements.
