Job Description

Description:

The Licensed Histology Technician/Histotechnologist performs routine and complex histologic procedures to prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This role includes gross examination and dissection of specimens in accordance with established protocols, regulatory requirements, and under appropriate supervision. The position requires current state licensure (where applicable) and adherence to all laboratory quality, safety, and compliance standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, accession, and process surgical and biopsy specimens
  • Perform tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining
  • Prepare routine (H&E) and special stains as required
  • Perform immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures as applicable
  • Maintain proper specimen identification and integrity throughout workflow
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology laboratory equipment
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures
  • Document procedures, results, and corrective actions per lab policy
Requirements:

Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology or related laboratory science

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current state histology license (if required by state law)
  • ASCP certification (HT or HTL) preferred or required (per employer)
  • Demonstrated competency in histology techniques and grossing procedures

Experience:

  • 1 year + of prior experience embedding, cutting, staining, specimen grossing and other pertinent histology experience in a fast paced working environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to perform patient care activities and operate standard medical equipment.
  • Ability to use computers and standard office equipment.
