Job Description


The City of Beaverton is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant City Attorney. This role helps the city minimize legal exposure, maintain ethical standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and proactively identify and mitigate operational and strategic risks. This position provides legal advice to city departments on procurement, contracts, policies, municipal operations, ordinances, and regulatory compliance.


The ideal candidate is a collaborative attorney with strong municipal law knowledge, sound judgment, clear communication skills, and the ability to build effective working relationships.


This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, procurement solicitations, intergovernmental agreements, real property transaction documents, ordinances, resolutions, policies, and legal memoranda to assure legal protection to the city in conformance with applicable federal, state and local laws.
  • Confer with and advise city staff on legal questions pertaining to their respective powers, duties, functions, and obligations.
  • Provide legal education and training to city staff on general government topics.
  • Provide legal strategies and guide city staff on how to respond to and manage complex contract disputes and settlements.
  • Draft, review, and testify regarding proposed local ordinances, resolutions, in addition to state and federal legislation and administrative rules. Review all associated documents and materials, including agenda bills and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Advise departments on legal and policy issues, changes in laws and provide recommendations for federal, state and local legislative changes. Draft policies and procedures to conform city operations to applicable federal, state, and local law.
  • Provide verbal and written legal advice to staff on issues related to land use and arising out of or relating to the enforcement of city codes.
  • Develop work plans, timelines, and resource allocations for assigned projects. Monitor progress to ensure objectives are met. Prepare reports and recommendations.
  • Attend public meetings and provide legal advice to governing bodies, boards, commissions, and task forces.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace aligned with the city’s values and strategic goals.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Law degree from a fully-accredited law school; and
  • Seven years* of professional legal experience relevant to municipal law; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent toperform the essential functions of the position.


*Candidates with at least five years of directly-related experience are welcome to apply. Applicants who have not yet met the seven year minimum requirement may be hired in an underfill capacity and will start at Step 0 of the salary range ($10,527 monthly, effective July 1, 2026) until they meet the required seven years of experience.


Licensing and special requirements

  • Membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check, including Criminal Justice information Services (CJIS) fingerprints.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Within 30 days of hire the successful candidate will be required to receive CJIS certification.

Salary range: $11,054 - $14,814 monthly**

**Salary includes a 4% Cost of Living Adjustment that will take effect July 1, 2026.


Starting pay within the posted range is based on a review of your related work experience, as required by the Oregon Equal Pay Act. We compare the experience shown in your application materials with the qualifications for the position. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will start at step one. Applicants whose work history clearly demonstrates additional directly related experience may be placed at a higher step within the range.
