Job Summary
Call for GRA Applications:
The Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion is seeking a dynamic graduate research assistant to support innovative, community-led tobacco prevention and cessation programming and improve health equity in Kentucky.
Program: The CDC-funded EMPOWER (Empowering and Mobilizing Intergenerational Community Partners to Reduce Menthol & Flavored Tobacco Use Among Communities at Risk for Use in Kentucky) program is a five-year grant intended to address disproportionate use of mentholated and flavored tobacco products among BIPOC communities in two heavily affected communities across Kentucky. Programming focuses on a community-driven approach through the engagement of diverse partners to expand community capacity, community members and community coalitions who will drive program direction, and targeting of multi-level influences of tobacco use (community attitudes/beliefs/knowledge, social norms, interpersonal relationships, accessibility and availability of cessation resources, and policy).
Position Description: Supervised by the Program Coordinators, the GRA will
- collaborate with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, church groups, and other youth and community organizations to provide tailored programming, resources, and activities related to mentholated tobacco products and other flavored tobacco products.
- Implement prevention programming to provide information about the effects of tobacco use and other related topics to historically marginalized communities.
- Assist in community outreach, listening sessions, webinars/conferences, media development, and professional development sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the program coordinator to meet program objectives.

Position Responsibilities:

Research assistants will support intervention delivery, stakeholder communication, reporting, and dissemination of findings.

Opportunities will be provided to develop conference presentations, abstracts, peer-reviewed manuscripts, professional networking, enriching activities (speaker series, workshops), mentoring undergraduate students, statistical analysis, grantsmanship, and development of communication and promotional materials.

NOTE: No prior knowledge on the topic of tobacco use or public health is needed. The program will provide comprehensive training.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Excellent verbal and written skills; intermediate skills in Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher; advanced skills in Word and Microsoft Outlook; skills in editing documents; social media skills

Preferred Education/Experience
Pre-employment criminal check, employment check, as required by school districts.
• Evidence-based curriculum training must be obtained within 1 month of employment, and prior to in-school or related program delivery. This will be provided through the position.
