Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
Position Overview
Kimball Health Services is seeking a detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to join our laboratory team. The MLT performs diagnostic laboratory tests and procedures that assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
This role is essential in supporting patient care by ensuring accurate testing, maintaining laboratory quality standards, and contributing to a safe and efficient laboratory environment. The Medical Laboratory Technician may also assist with phlebotomy, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform moderately complex diagnostic laboratory tests and limited high-complexity testing
- Collect patient specimens, including performing phlebotomy for inpatients and outpatients as needed
- Monitor and evaluate laboratory quality control and instrument performance
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment
- Participate in quality assurance, proficiency testing, and survey readiness activities
- Maintain accurate documentation of testing procedures and results
- Assist with laboratory inventory and supply management
- Train coworkers or students in select laboratory procedures when assigned
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff
- Follow all HIPAA, safety, and regulatory requirements
Education & Certification
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field
- Must meet CLIA ’88 personnel requirements for laboratory testing personnel
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a recognized certifying agency or eligibility for certification
Skills & Abilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret laboratory data and technical instructions
- Effective communication skills with patients, physicians, and healthcare staff
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with laboratory equipment, procedures, and documentation systems
Mathematical & Technical Skills
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical and statistical concepts related to laboratory testing and data analysis
- Ability to analyze data and ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, and use of hands for laboratory procedures
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly, 50 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, and reach as needed for laboratory tasks
- Visual ability to accurately read instruments, labels, and test results
Work Environment
- Exposure to laboratory equipment, chemicals, and airborne particles
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens
- Moderate noise level in the laboratory environment
